I've pulled a bunch of data from the NCAA statistics. Here are the most interesting ones.

Offense:
UAB is 29th in scoring offense, 4th in C-USA
UAB is 26th in rushing offense, 3rd in C-USA
UAB is 39th in passing offense, 3rd in C-USA
UAB is 21st in total offense, 3rd in C-USA
UAB is 29th in third down success, 5th in C-USA
UAB is 14th in yards per completion, 1st in C-USA
UAB is 39th in completion percentage, 3rd in C-USA

UAB is one of only 9 teams with Top 40 ranks in both rushing and passing yards. UAB and Marshall are the only G5 schools of those 9.

UAB, Marshall, MTSU and Western Kentucky dominate almost all of the top offensive stats in the conference.

Defense:
UAB is 85th in scoring defense, 6th in C-USA
UAB is 59th in rushing defense, 5th in C-USA
UAB is 71st in passing defense, 7th in C-USA
UAB is 64th in total defense, 6th in C-USA
UAB is 26th in third down defense, 2nd in C-USA
UAB is 27th in fourth down defense, 4th in C-USA
UAB is 29th in first downs allowed, 2nd in C-USA

UAB is 54th in sacks per game, 7th in C-USA
UAB is 45th in tackles for loss per game, 3rd in C-USA

Obviously these numbers aren't as good as the offensive ones, but I think we all know they are vastly improved from the past decade or more. Getting off the field after third or fourth down is the best improvement to me.

Worth mentioning that North Texas is the best team in C-USA in sacks and tackles for loss. We will need to be ready for that this weekend.

Special Teams:
UAB is 12th in kickoff returns, 1st in C-USA

Despite all of the good stats, UAB has several places for improvement. UAB is near the bottom nationally in turnover margin, kickoff return defense, and punt return defense.

The numbers put context around the obvious improvement in the team. UAB is ranked in the top half in the conference is almost every meaningful category.
Defense gives up 28.8 points on average.

Our team is giving up 28.8 points on average. Our defense is not. We're 127/128 in turnover margin. 118/128 in interceptions thrown per game. 90/128 in fumbles per game. We just can't hold onto the ball. We average a pick 6 every game.

Not to mention our defense however doesn't help our offense out in this category. 125/128 in takeaway percentage.

Not many takeaways i. e. Forced fumbles or int's.

How many points have been scored when our defense wasn't on the field?
28

Technically it was only 24 points scored when our defense wasn't on the field. I think our defense actually stopped 1 or 2 of the PAT's or 2-point conversion attempts following a pick-6. I know it was at least 1 because I remember that the 2-point conversion attempt was intercepted following the pick-6 at Western Kentucky. 04-rock
The correct number is 18 points on 3 pick-6 plays... points allowed by our offense. FIU made both of the PAT's after their pick-6 plays and UAB intercepted WKU's 2-point conversion attempt after their pick-6.

...and MSU made their XP after their pick 6.
Let's also count the field goals where the opposition didn't have to pick up a 1st down.
Bottom line is that all 3 phases of the game are giving us a fighting chance unlike past years.

Oh yeah. I forgot about that freakish pick-6 in the Mississippi State game. You're correct. 24 points surrendered by our offense with no defense on the field... and you can't blame the defense for giving up the PAT because a missed PAT is a fluke... 27 points given up by our offense on 4 pick-6 plays plus 3 PAT's.

I'll have to dig up the stats on the "pick-3 plays" that our offense gave up by setting up the opponent in FG range.
We also gave up a punt return TD to AA&M. That's 5 non-offensive scores.

OTOH, we've only had one non-offensive score, Nelson's kickoff return to open the WKU game.
11 sacks 10 given up
4 int's 8 thrown
7 fumbles 5 lost. 4 fumbles forced 1 recovered
28 points off turnovers opponents 78 points

The bold ones are killer stats. BUT, I think they only add up to one loss - FIU. In the other loss, while we played well and scared MSU, we were going to lose late in that game anyway because of their depth.

We need to do better going forward.

I don't think it can get better, we're pretty banged up on D.

We can take better care of the ball and stop throwing pick sixes. That's on our O.
Yeah the pick6 Cody threw against state was stupid, that's the play that changed the game to me.
