Lucky us!! We were able to "steal" Jon Heacock from that defensive powerhouse Purdue during the off season. Purdue ranked 104 out of 123 FBS schools in Total Defense in 2013-14. Fire him? Hell YES! Why in the world did we ever hire him in the first place???
maybe they can get Brady Hoke or Mattison next year.
Tom Amstutz gets my vote.
He was DC at Kent State when the Golden Flashes won the MAC East
and were the MAC's #2 scoring defense and upset #18 Rutgers 35-23. Lost to #18 NIU for the MACC in 2OT's 37-44. Their only regular season loss was @Kentucky.
This D will be better than last seasons. Four injuries and a week without any original corners will impact every team in the nation. Every halftime so far we have made adjustments. Lets wait and see how the next few weeks go before jumping off the Launchpad here in Toledo...

It doesn't seem like the players are the problem, it's the scheme (giving 10 years cushions on 3rd and 1, playing a zone when it obviously doesn't work).

In the case of Cincinnati, they probably could have gone deep every play and hit a high % of them because of the quality of their WR's and QB. In that case UT was better off giving them the short routes, eat up some of the time clock and maybe to get some T/O or penalties. I pity the RedHawks.

I would like to see them play more man coverage which should also make it easier to blitz if necessary. Of course much of the MAC seems to be down this year QB-wise so maybe they can still be a big fish in a small pond with their zone coverage even if it is now painfully obvious that their (absence of) pass coverage does not allow them to compete with the big boys.
Remember they have a good pass and run offense and a good run defense, so that should be enough be strong in a weak conference such as the MAC.
wait till UC plays OSU, could be worse for OSU than VT. Then complain about how bad our defense is. Two very tough offensive teams with top flight college QB's.

Gunner Kiel looked almost human during the third quarter when Toledo was able to get a bit of pressure on him. I am sure that fact will not be lost on tOSU and although East Carolina took down the Hokies at Lane stadium this past Saturday, thus making tOSU's loss to VT to look even worse than it already did, I will still be very surprised if Kiel has a big day against tOSU or if Cincinnati leaves there with a win------although we can still hope, I suppose.

We played the receivers tighter in the 3rd quarter and forced them outside. Their QB wasn't making those more difficult throws. Then the 4th quarter starts and we're back to playing 8-10 yards off. Can't blame the players for a boneheaded defensive scheme.

Hope you're right... We'll see how we play against Ball State. If we are still giving the big cushion to WR's, I predict that it won't be pretty. Hope that I am WRONG!

I read that UC's coach said that UT went to man coverage in the 3rd quarter, then back to zone in the 4th. Look how that worked out.

If that is indeed true, then we appear to have a serious problem. Maybe it is time to remember "Fire the cannon or fire Shannon", although at least the run defense appears stout at present.

4th Quarter:
UT Woodside drops TD pass=UT FG
UC Drive good coverage two defenders on Chisholm=UC TD
UT 27 yd KO return negated by illegal block
UT 3rd&4 UT OL holding making it 3rd&14
UT 35 yd punt with 11 yd return for UC
UC FB UT Defense stops Bearcats=UC FG
UT drive Rocket FB 3rd&goal Offensive Pass Interference on the Rockets
Next play Woodside is sacked. UT misses 48 yd FG.
UC is 3rd&6 UT Defense Offside now 3rd&1
UC 2yd run picks up first down
UC drive continues=UC TD
Couple of minutes to go UT FB Julian comes in for mop up.
Game Over.

Don't blame the coverage in the 4th quarter. Poor execution, particularly on Offense, and penalties on UT's part. To many points left on the field.

This may describe some of the problem. http://www.bcsn.tv/news_article/show/420556

After last season, I really expected a devastating pass rush this season, but that hasn't materialized. We had a few pressures against Cincy but not that many. The sacks we got against MU were I think all coverage sacks. I guess we miss Elliott and Smith at LEO much more than I expected. The rule of thumb has always been that you can play press man if you have an exceptional pass rush, but if you don't you are better off playing zone. Of course the injuries to the corners have just made things that much harder all around.
Quote:UT is taking the long view with the 3-3-5.

Opposing QB's seem to be taking the long view of it, too.

So, it's confusing...except the part where the middle of the field is wide open.

Alllllways.

No, back during the 35-0 streak when the Defense was statistically ranked #1 in the nation under Frank X.
