Sept. 27th event will be a “free” all-day football extravaganza featuring tailgating and fireworks; highlighted by first ETSU scrimmage

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 12, 2014) – The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, in partnership with the ETSU National Alumni Association, officially announced Friday the schedule of events and details regarding the Game Time 101 tailgating event scheduled for Sept. 27. All activities and admission will be free of charge.

The event, which is sponsored by Food City, East Coast Wings and East Tenn Rent-Alls, will be held in the on-campus parking lot located behind Warf-Pickel Hall and adjacent to the new parking garage located on the west end of campus. Fans are encouraged to tailgate throughout the day on Saturday, and the lot will be available for tailgate setup beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday evening.

“Our hope is that this Game Time 101 event will give our fans a sneak peek at what an ETSU game-day experience will be like,” said ETSU Senior Associate Athletic Directior/COO Scott Carter. “We want people to come out and tailgate throughout the day. We will have a jumbotron screen on hand so fans can watch ESPN Game Day, as well as their favorite national games.”

“We will also have multiple sponsors and vendors on hand who will have booths, games and contests scheduled throughout the day, and some of those special activities will include a Kids’ Zone, a barbeque contest and the Food City Tailgater of the Day Award. But the most exciting part of the day will begin at approximately noon, as we will have a special ETSU Game Day Show featuring Coach Torbush, followed by the Buc Walk, the introduction of our team, and our first open scrimmage.”

While the event will get underway at 9 a.m. with the start of ESPN’s Game Day coverage followed by the opening of the Kids Zone area at 11 a.m., the highlight of the day will begin with an ETSU version of “Game Day” which will start at noon on the main stage. ETSU’s Voice of the Bucs Jay Sandos will be joined by ETSU head coach Carl Torbush and other personalities to discuss the day’s college football games and update fans on news surrounding the ETSU program.

At 12:30 p.m., the ETSU football team and the Buccaneer drum line will take a “Buc Walk” through the tailgating area and make their way to the nearby football practice fields located just south of the Center for Physical Activity. The Bucs will then participate in their first official open scrimmage beginning precisely at 1:01 p.m.

A special football team autograph session will follow at 3 p.m., and fans can also enjoy watching the day’s best college football games on the jumbotron throughout the afternoon. Contests for “Best Barbeque” and “Tailgater of the Day” will also be conducted throughout the day, with the winner of the barbeque contest being announced at 3:30 and the tailgater award being announced at 5:45 p.m. Fans will also be able to compete in a Cornhole Tournament beginning at 3:45.

Fireworks will wrap up the day’s activities beginning at dusk.

So what are your thoughts on this schedule, are you going to be there, and do you think this will be a successful community event to promote ETSU Football and the university in general?
I sure hope that this is a successful event. I might go from like 12:00-1:00 if it looks like a good event from the road. They are really sticking their necks out on the line here, and betting on community support for an all day event. If it turns out to be a bust, it will be a huge embarrassment and waste of money.
I plan on going. I will be great to have that atmosphere on campus again. It is only an early season scrimmage and I think they know it probably will not be huge but it gives opportunities for fans, students, players, band members and alumni to have a sort of game day experience. The first time in 11 years will feel good. Cannot wait to do that Buc walk.

Legion of the Miserable. Blue and Gold Edition.
They should invade Paladin Stadium that day for the WCU game. A whole slew of folks lining up and down I-26 to US 25 waving the blue and gold.
I'm there. As far as only going for an hour if the crowd is big enough, how about just showing up period? Do you need a large crowd to validate you or something? There will be a good crowd for this thing I bet. I'd say students will show up for sure. What else is there to do on campus?
Looking for the magic, looking to establish a positive perception, looking to find what can be continued, looking to squelch the negative with the positive ---- give them credit for this experiment. Like most experiments, the outcome will obviously be the determining factor. But, don't let the naysayers seize the sound bite platform and paint it as "mickey mouse".

I can't show up for more than the hour, my kids play soccer that Saturday and after the scrimmage, there is nothing attractive on that schedule for me.

I am sure they will bribe the students in some way to get them to show up, that is the only way they ever do. As for what else is there to do on campus? Nothing, that is why ETSU is Suitcase U, the students will be fleeing campus as soon as they get out of class that Friday like they do every weekend.
Game Time 101 is getting some slams here. What should they be doing with this event? Free kegs, free imported quality Colorado pot, and some sex themed displays? Can't get there myself, too far away, but the scrimmage would be my reason for attending to celebrate the return of football.
I wish I could go because it sounds like they're really making an effort.

And so what if they have to bribe the students? If they put on a quality event they may not have to bribe them in the future. Hopefully someone in the athletic department is working very hard with the frats and sororities to get them to show up.
How am I slamming it? I am stating a fact, to get students to show up to any sporting event they have to bribe them, basketball, baseball or soccer. I also said that students don't stick around on the weekends and go home in large numbers, also a fact. So again how was I slamming anything?
I am not slamming the event either, I hope it is successful, I might even go out for a bit myself. I was just pointing out that getting students out is hard. There is a difference between having students show up for an event because they are excited and want to attend vs showing up for a bribe. Yes bribes work but the department needs to swing the needle the other way.

The issue with students is, the campus usually clears out on Friday afternoon. Keeping students on campus during the weekend is one advantage of having football.

IF we can get them to stay. As always, marketing and how you sell the event is key.

For student to stay and attend, football must be cool, hip, luring, social --- the place to be during game time, and not necessarily solely to see a football game. How to establish that, like others have done, is the one million dollar question. Will that be factored into the stadium design -- a cool place to hang out?
