Quote:Virginia state health officials are working to confirm whether the enterovirus that's plagued more than a thousand children across the country, has surfaced in Virginia. In the past 48 hours, more than ten kids in the Richmond area have been hospitalized in respiratory distress. Four of those children were admitted to an intensive care unit.

State health officials are testing samples from the ten children being treated at St. Mary's Hospital. The Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU has also reported an uptick of children with respiratory problems. Results should show within two days if those children are infected with Enterovirus EV-D68. HCA Virginia, which includes Chippenham and Henrico Doctors' Hospitals, are reporting no "clusters" of respiratory cases among children, at this time.

Expect more and more of this with open borders.
This upper respiratory virus is new to the country and is affecting school aged children. Huh,...how would they catch such a third world virus?
Well, that's just great. This particular virus has been around for 50+ years so it's not something some immigrant is bringing here. It is interesting that it's making a reemergence this year though. Will have to keep an eye on my kids.
Obama refuses to release the information of where the illegal immigrant children were sent. Well, I believe we are learning. This is unreal.

To the same extent? And the same strain?

This is the sort of thing gov't should be working to prevent, yet this administration is taking the obvious steps to make it worse.

If you look at the map of where it has hit, it is all areas of high illegal concentration. Get your head out of the sand, the illegals brought it here.

How do you know the gov health orgs haven't been working to prevent this? We can't always control and be one step ahead nature.

For isolated cases? No, you can't always be ahead of nature. For widespread outbreaks? Yes, that's largely possible.

Pro tip: you don't know what you're talking about.
It's here as well.

You extremists are the ones throwing out these claims. I would enjoy some science and math to support your extremist opinions, thanks!

You're right, this is out of my professional expertise. I doubt you do either (other than google searching and providing extremist conspiracy theory websites to support your extremist theory). 04-cheers
You can thank Barack Obama's deferred action program. Expect the viruses to continue to get worse.

Then feel free to study those subjects on your own time. Stop wasting ours after you admit you're ignorant to them.

Quote:There are more than 100 types of enteroviruses causing about 10 to 15 million infections in the United States each year, according to the CDC. They are carried in the intestinal tract and often spread to other parts of the body.

The season often hits its peak in September, as summer ends and fall begins.

So why all the concern now?

What's unusual at the moment is the high number of hospitalizations.

The virus has sent more than 30 children a day to a Kansas City, Missouri, hospital, where about 15% of the youngsters were placed in intensive care, officials said.

"It's worse in terms of scope of critically ill children who require intensive care. I would call it unprecedented," said Dr. Mary Anne Jackson, a director for infectious diseases at Children's Mercy Hospital, where about 475 children were recently treated.

"I've practiced for 30 years in pediatrics, and I've never seen anything quite like this," she said.

What's special about this particular type of enterovirus?

An analysis by the CDC showed at least 30 of the Kansas City children tested positive for EV-D68, Missouri health officials said.

It's a type of enterovirus that's uncommon, but not new.

It was first identified in the 1960s and there have been fewer than 100 reported cases since that time. But it's possible, Pallansch said, that the relatively low number of reports might be because EV-D68 is hard to identify.

EV-D68 was seen last year in the United States and this year in various parts of the world.

has anybody een a specific map in the states where it hit. I know urban population centers but I'm curious on the individual counties. I'm going to call our local health dept. This could literally kill my immuno compromised daughter.

I will say a prayer to protect your daughter from this disease. As a father whose daughter has an asthma condition, I share your concern. She is grown now, but still concerns me.

Quote:Ten states have contacted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for help in investigating enterovirus — Colorado, North Carolina, Georgia, Ohio, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Kentucky, according to WXIA-TV.

Just got off the phone with my County Health Director. No documented cases in my county. No documented cases in NW Ohio. Documented cases in NE Ohio but she wouldn't give me details.
