These are just rough thoughts without watching the tape, but here we go.

You'd be a fool to start anywhere but the defense. I don't think anybody in their wildest dreams could have imagine the 3-4 working out this well. There's just athletic guys flying all over the place. I'm not going to sit here and act like NU has a great offense (I think their offense sucks), but that was still a Big Ten defensive line that couldn't block NIU's offensive line at all the 4th quarter. Meehan had a couple sacks, Rock had a couple, I think Flemming had one. Ford didn't get one but he was causing havoc out there.

It's obviously a long season, but the turn around on all levels from the defense is amazing. Everyone has stepped their game up a level. I was probably one of the biggest Santa backers on here, but his play the first two games has been far and away better than at any point in his career. Not just racking up tackles, but making impact plays. I thought Lemon had a great game today. Just really solid play from the linebackers.

And then the secondary. Last year, NIU's secondary was absolute hot garbage. Then they lost a first round pick to the NFL. The late touchdown was bad and Northwestern dropped another TD, but there has been some really solid play there. To be playing as many freshman as NIU is in the defensive backfield, and to look as good as they have is really impressive.

When everybody was ripping on Carey for not being able to decide on a QB, do you see why now? The consensus was that McIntosh looked the best last week, and then he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn today. Then you bring in Maddie and he looked great on his drive. Drew Hare looks awkward in everything he does, but you can't argue with what he did today. He made every big play and his two TDs could not have been anymore perfectly thrown. I 100% still think they need to find a guy before the teeth of the MAC schedule, but the QB battle is far from over.

221 yards rushing against a Big Ten opponent. And it wasn't Jordan Lynch rushing yards. The offensive line did a pretty solid job. I'm not sure I'lll ever understand why Akeem didn't get more carries his first three years here, but he's a bonafide stud. Fast as hell and he runs tough for his size. Nice to see Cam out there today too, even if limited duty.

You cannot cover Da'Ron Brown. He may not always catch it, but he's just about always open. Only 180 passing yards on the day, and 128 and both TDs went to Da'Ron. I think Beebe is going to be a player too. That punt return was great. They really need to get Paris off kick returns and put Beebe back there.

Just an overall point of view. To go in after losing a Heisman finalist and a first round pick and beat an in state Big Ten team is a huge "we're here to stay" moment for the program. Certainly wasn't a perfect game, especially on offense, but the guys know how to win.

And huge props to the fans today. It felt like a home game at times. Absolutely awesome.

Go Huskies!

yep, gotta agree with your recap.....I was shocked by our D performance. D Brown is a stud, but I expect some good stuff from Canada. Glad to see Stingley out there
Another great recap Mr. 7 04-bow

So cool to see Beebe bust out for a big run! 5 sacks today was unreal, their QB is going to be hurting. Cam Stingley taking reps was a shock, looked pretty solid. Going to Evanston is a lot of fun, but after today I doubt we'll play them for a while.
The starting QB battle just got a bit more murky after today. McIntosh looked the best last week, and struggled today. Offense was clicking with Hare and Maddie. Defense looked great, attacked the football. Field Goals will be a huge weakness this year, hopefully games don't come down to that this year...
just wondering about a couple of things:
1) what was the estimated NIU fan turnout?
2) is Fitz on the hot seat now?

Yeah, I'm really curious if they try and use another kicker at UNLV.

Having Wedel do all 3 is asking too much, especially since he isn't accurate, no need to keep the leg tired. Bad thing is, I don't think anyone on the roster is capable of being a 67-75% kicker or a guy with good range.

NIU is going to have to be great on coverage and returns, because they're gonna leave points off the board with field goals.
Big shout out to the run D. Fantastic.
Comments... just watching the Huskies coming out of locker room and taking the field is impressive. Their HUGE and athletic. You just know its gonna hurt tomorrow after looking at them.

Hare is a gamer, has his shortcomings but can fire it. Thought it took our coaches too long to get the ball to our play makers. Some of our dbs delivered big hits, in particular #24 Mays and #2 Moore. #29 Logan's int was one of the best I ever saw. LBs just have a helleva time in coverage., that goes for most lbs on all teams. Swear they can't count and react to the flow of routes. #43 Smalls deflection late 4th quarter, Damn thats a FR?

OL solid. Im partial to our big backs, but Daniels put a show on in the 4th

We lose -2- NFLer's on D and look like that? great to see. Kicking game 03-puke.

Carey out coached Fitz. Not sure if it was by default or not. Fitz and staff not impressive today. Agree with 7 on NIU fans. I sat on west side and it looked like Indiana or Ohio St was in the house. Loaded with red.

We have beaten -3- Big 10 teams in a row. Say that again. We have beaten -3-Big 10 teams in a row. Chicago's Big 10 team resides in DeKalb!
[attachment=5888] saw plenty of red in the stand where I was sitting. The biggest concentration was here.

We were up there in the top right! Go Huskies!
NIU: Chicago's Big 10 beaters!

Our front 7 was fantastic today. As great as Ken Bishop was I think our D-line is going to be a lot better overall this year. They just abused Northwestern's O-line in the second half today.

Quarterback, who knows. McIntosh missed three throws while he was in there and Maddie and Hare did a nice job. Hare threw the ball well and was Harnish-esque on the read option. Maybe we just go with the hot hand game by game. It's not ideal but it's all we got.

Great atmosphere, great turnout by Huskie fans, great job by our players and coaches.
Was there word before the game that stingily was going to be back? I thought he was going to be out for at least 4 weeks...

I'm pretty sure McIntosh has some sort of calf/lower leg injury. He was wearing a sleeve on his leg and was limping after the game. Doesn't really excuse his overthrows, but yeah.
Daniels looked like he hurt is foot a little.
Wedel can't kickoff. They never make it to the end zone.
Tommy Lee is overrated and Brown is the real deal.
Conlon could be suspended for throwing a punch?
J.B did nothing thank goodness we had Stingly.
Love the Freshmen CB's. I was glad we played aggressive.
Turner should be the only kickoff returner.
Picture of the crowd (just before the amazing interception).

An unscientific observation in my pregame group, morw than half were wearing black or gray. We had a ton of Huskie fans today.

When Maddie and Hare were in the game the offense looked almost exactly like it did the last 3 years. That's not good for opposing defenses. Also, Tommylee was pissed with at least 2 of those bubble screen attempts that were thrown way too hard.

As far as the defense goes, gotta give the staff credit for switching to a 3-4. It plays to the strengths of the players we have. Meehan's flourishing this year, as are Boomer and Rock. Santa's looked better as well and Ford is a consistently better rusher when he's standing up. And this is all so far without Bass, possibly the best defensive player on the team.

Also, I'm gonna eat crow on Da'ron Brown. Going into last season I didn't think he could be a #1 or #2 receiver on the team. Glad I can say I was wrong. He's the most dangerous receiver we have at the moment.

Biggest play of the game was after NU's TD to goup 7-3 was NIU able to recover its fumble on the KO return. That saved their asses.
