It's a funny story for a number of reasons, but where I am confused is how contacting an 8th grader constitutes an NCAA violation. Haven't a number of major FB schools handed out scholarships to 8th graders in the past???
The potential recruiting violation is that women's college basketball coaches cannot call prospective student athletes until after September 1 of their Junior year. Any contact prior to that has to be via mail or through a call initiated by the prospective student athlete.

UConn's contention is 8th graders are not considered "prospective student athletes" as they haven't entered 9th grade yet.

so how come it varies across sports?

not bashing womens basketball as a sport, I'm bashing whichever AAC school took the time to report this. WBB is dominated by a select group of schools, none of which are in the AAC other than uconn. Why they would even bother with this in a sport that they have no chance against uconn is beyond me.

Who are the other big hitters in the "select group"? I can think of Uconn, Tenn., I guess ND, and who else? Serious question.
Meanwhile in Chapel Hill...

What is really amusing is that the NCAA hit us with a violation in less than 24 hours...incredible.

Stanford should be in there.
since 1995 only 6 other teams have won a NC besides tenn/uconn

The Hartford Courant reports:
"Multiple sources told The Courant Thursday that neither the Atlantic Coast Conference nor the American Athletic Conference were responsible for the complaint made against Auriemma."

Hmm... so it wasn't anyone in the ACC or AAC. I wonder what Sort of Egomaniacal Cheaters could possibly be responsible for turning in UConn?

My guess would be Notre Dame or Baylor's head coach...

It the ACC was ruled out, it can't be Notre Dame. My guess would be Tennessee. They still have an axe to grind with UConn because of Geno's recruiting of Maya Moore and because we now have more championships than them.

From this type of silly recruiting thing along with UConn's exclusion from the ACC by our former northeastern rivals, there seems to be a common theme... a lot of people are trying hard to kick UConn down for their own gain.

If you can't beat UConn, try to hurt them.

Other sports can't make contact before the junior year either.
I agree with this column. The snitch who reported UConn needs to be outed!

What I find funny is that it's not like other schools have a chance with Mo'ne. UCONN is the gold standard for Womens BB and more often than not they will get the prospects of their choosing, especially if the prospect is from the northeast as Mo'ne is. If UCONN can convince a top HS prospect from Syracuse to go to UCONN then Mo'ne is already a lock for UCONN.
I'm still confused why this is a violation. In women's soccer 24% of scholarships offers are made while the prospect is still in middle school.
