But as I read this article from the longtime beat writer before he left, I can't help but see similarities to our situation

But that is definitely an interesting read.
I think this happening alot. We've certainly felt a similar pinch with Steve and Drew.
Papers are getting desperate. They're channeling resources and attention to what will sell the most papers (or the electronic equivalent).

For the have-nots, it's a vicious cycle. They less they cover my team, the less I read/buy, the less they cover my team.

Fact is, I don't get a whole hell of a lot of my Blazer news from al.com, and even less since Champlin was reassigned.

Do, they care? Probably, but we don't give them enough attention to justify it (in their eyes), so stick your ever-diminishing resources into that which sells: All-gump. All the time.

To paraphrase someone in the CUSA thread, the piddly little school nobody cares about will be around when the fishwrappers have gone the way of the buggy whip.
I drove up to Memphis after the game. The Sunday paper had a good front sports page coverage of the UM Tigers, but apparently since they are no longer in C-USA, those league games were only noted in the tiny type except for those who played P5 teams.
The commercial Appeal covers Memphis football decently, but not near as strongly as basketball. There is a huge divide between interest in football and basketball. As an example on Friday, the day before the first football game, a sports radio host was going over the Tiger schedule predicting wins and losses....only it was the basketball schedule. There was no talk on the football game.

By the time basketball season gets closer, tiger football will get no coverage.
