This one just has me going WTF?????

The old saying is "Never argue with people who buy their ink by the barrel" and FIU athletics is doing just that. Pete Garcia needs to be let go IMHO. He just shut down the ONLY paper that gives any coverage to FIU.

http://www.miamiherald.com/2014/08/29/43...tball.html

“It’s unprecedented for any local team to refuse to credential our beat reporter without reason,” Miami Herald Executive Editor Aminda Marqués Gonzalez said of the four pro and two college teams the Herald covers on a regular basis. “The team does not get to choose who covers the program.”

Now comes another strange headline: Garcia has banned Neal from covering FIU - and won't say why, according to The Herald. The first, public evidence of something strange there was when FIU canceled its football media day because Neal was planning to cover it (FIU is part of his responsibilities).

Look, sometimes it's part of our world that people don't like the reporters that cover them. And sometimes reporters don't like the people they cover. But there's a professional way to get through that, especially if you're a school of higher learning that gets little attention to begin with.

But play the censorship card?

Really?

What exactly are they teaching at FIU?
What did Neal do to FIU?

Im not really sure, I have heard his articles can come off as negative, but honestly FIU hasnt had a lot of good things going on lately.

It seems silly though to deny the biggest paper in your market access to the game.

It doesn't bother me. We are in an age of declining interest in newspapers. Every FBS quality program has the ability to generate local news about their program.

Barrels of ink don't translate to the internet. The Miami Herald needs FIU more than FIU needs them. I'm willing to bet FIU eventually gets a new beat writer at the Herald.
I would say the newspaper guy was wrong, yes the ad has every right to determine who covers and he handled it.

We had a very similar problem here in Hattiesburg a few years ago. Larry Eustachy finally denied our beat writer access to his players. Would not let him at practice at all. We had another news writer that actually dug to find any negative story he could about the school.

Its easier to control in a place like here, we got advertisers, mainly the car dealers to pull ads for a sunday.

The sports writer mysteriously left for the gulf coast paper and now has a totally different attitude towards us. He is the guy who wrote the 20 year series that was much discussed on here.

I dont know what the papers down there are doing to you, but your ad didnt just refuse the guy for no reason. I say he showed some balls.

If you are correct that the coverage is minimal, then shutting out the paper is really not a big loss, correct?

DJN was locked out since fall camp I believe, so this is not a recent development.

I don't agree with the approach taken by the AD but understand why ...

Sorry but that's just not true. The Herald has the following teams locally it can cover

Heat
Panthers
Dolphins
Marlins
Canes

While FIU did not get a lot of coverage in the Herald, they basically just went to none with this move. Print maybe dying, but the reputation that FIU is now showing is that they are not media friendly. That will translate across the baord to TV, radio etc.

I don't know. Media types tend to travel in packs. I could see this spreading to TV and Radio as well that FIU is not media friendly. We both struggle to get coverage in an area that has 4 pro sports teams, and 1 P5 team. I think this is a bad move by FIU.

As another saying goes, "it's hard to shine a turd". How could any reporter be expected to write glowing articles about the program?

I don't agree with the decision our AD has taken on the issue either. However, as you mentioned, I understand why. Every time I read an article from Mr. Neil it always comes across negatively. Even his complements come with a little bit mockery. It is almost as if he's force to cover FIU sports and he takes that frustration on the school and its teams.

Once again you have added nothing to yet another discussion. Your opinion means %&$% since You know nothing about the subject at hand.

If valuable content was required for all posts here, there'd be very few posts, no?
Again, I ask, what did the guy do? What is the issue?

Who's talking about valuable content? It is about you and the amount of trolling you do on our board.

Not being media friendly makes me like FIU even more. News has become about opinion. I want news. FIU can generate news. They don't need to be included in a paper no one is looking at anyway. If they were feuding with a local T.V. station, or local sports radio station, it would be different.
A few years ago, the FIU beat writer for the Herald claimed to quit because they didn't give FIU enough space, eventually starting a blog.

http://thewizofpods.com/Media/PanthersProwl.jpg

Maybe they were hoping for that kind of, ahem, devotion.

And for whoever said it, the AD absolutely does not have the right to dictate to an independent media outlet who covers and doesn't cover them. He can express his wishes that someone not cover his programs with the Herald management, making his case as to why the reporter shouldn't cover them anymore. And there have been times where news outlets have pulled beat reporters who have lost their objectivity one way or the other, but unless FIU purchased the Herald (they haven't, have they? no, seriously, have they?), they can't do much more than ban the paper from covering them. And while newspapers are struggling, the Herald still holds a lot more cache to the average Miami area resident than most if not all outlets there.

It might be a nice symbolic victory, but it could be a pyrrhic one if they burn a bridge with one of the outlets that cover them.
People don't care that much about FIU sports in Miami - sorry, but it's a fact. FIU is like the community college in the city, talked about in the same breath as MDC, not that it's a bad thing necessarily but still the stigma exists. I can understand why FIU might not want Neil covering them but they probably won't find anyone much better.
I would love to see Landon denied press credentials for a season or two. That would be the funniest **** ever.

Y'all have one dude that hates you. We've got a city of (?) 65,000 rednecks against us. 1-24 is actually not too bad considering that we're fielding a team in ******* Leningrad.
