Bottom line:
We are getting beat badly in MI by our in-state MAC rivals. It appears both WMU and CMU are doing very well. Look at #9 - 25 from today's Freep listing and it is littered with CMU and WMU recruits.
I wonder if all of our recruiting 'happy talk' should be so happy?
Are we really doing well out of state in other midwest states (to compensate for our lack of success in-state) or are we drinking kool-aid?
This is CC's second recruiting class and if he has two weak classes in a row in a few years our talent level could be problematic say in 2016 (or thereabouts). CC closed strong with his 1st recruiting class which made fans happy, but let's not overrate it. It was very ordinary.
Remember the only real way to even up the talent differential, is to get some top 6 in MAC recruiting classes. We could still be years away.

I'm not particularly worried about in-state recruits. Why would all of these recruits flock to Western in particular? Fleck is promising them the world. Early playing time, pro contracts, whatever. When Western falls flat this year, the recruits will think twice before considering Western. One may even see lots of transfers after this season's collapse.

I see WMU as one of the more fascinating MAC FB stories in recent years (along with NIU's Orange Bowl bid).
They are threatening to break the mold of fair to average recruiting which we see in the MAC FB.
The last time I can remember this type of recruiting was with Marshall and they won big in the MAC (before they left).

CC is not going to develop relationships in Michigan overnight. We should look at where is CC pulling players from. My gut so far tells me that we have for 2015 would be a top level FCS recruiting class. We still have time to "pull" this class up. Some will wait and see what EMU does this year.
As far as his first class being ordinary it wasn't ranked at the bottom of the MAC. English's first class I believe was ranked at the bottom of the MAC just for comparison. The key for the 2014 and 2015 class will be retention and development. I believe CC will be similar to Genyk-get guys who want to be here and develop them.

If Murphy is criticized (and he is) for not being able to recruit Michigan shouldn't CC being (also) criticized (for not being able to recruit Michigan)?
I'm sure CC will get better (in MI) but he has a lot of ground to make up with WMU and CMU.
That said, for whatever reasons MI MAC teams recruit MI football better than basketball. WMU and CMU recruit MI very well. I'm impressed by what I saw in the Freep today.
CMU, WMU and EMU do not recruit MI hoops as well as say Oakland or UDM. Why? I'm not really sure. Maybe McCallum is the reason for UDM? Maybe the appeal of Rochester over Ypsilanti, Mt. Pleasant or Kalamazoo?

I think the reason that Oakland and U of D have done better than Eastern and Central, is because they have had better records than Eastern and Central lately. Rome was not built in a day, and I think that applies with Eastern. We have had steady improvement with Coach Murphy, and if it continues, he will do better with recruiting in Michigan.
As I have said before, Central gives a bonus to its coaches for recruiting Michigan kids, so I am sure they work harder at trying to get those recruits. Personally, I don't care if we get that many Michigan recruits, as long as we get good recruits that will hopefully lead to championships.

Less I be wrong this year's team's nucleus is the class of four years ago (e.g., Russell, Cotton, Scott, Hill, etc.) and with the OL which was recruited (and redshirted) five years ago (e.g., Hansen, McFadden, Allison, etc.). The 2011 class, now true seniors, was by far English's best class, but they will be true seniors this year.
I'll double check, but English's last full recruiting class (2013) was decent (I have hopes for the QBs and linemen), 2014 was ordinary, 2015 looks ordinary so far.
If my facts and logic are correct, we'll have major talent problems next year unless the 2013 class really pans out.

And RE did very little with that talent. Good coaching and good schemes can make up for talent deficiencies.

I think 2012 was his highest rated class, with Juwan Lewis, Ike Spearman, and Quincy Jones. Unheralded guys from that class include Pat O'Connor, Mike Steals, and Hunter Matt. By the time all these guys are seniors, it should show to be easily English's best class.

Could be. Both 2011 and 2012 were very solid classes. Too bad we didn't win with the horses.
