Anyone remember the lady fingers they had at Seessel's? Wow they were so good. I would love to know if there is a bakery around town that has some good lady fingers.
Their lemon butter pies were the best.

yes I remember that as well. they also had a chocolate pie that was outstanding. but man I wish I could find a place that makes those lady fingers.
I grew up on them. We kids just expected them when we walked in the door. Something about the powdered sugar that got all over you and the kindly little old ladies who handed them to you like you were some kind of special guest. A great marketing tool.

I don't think you can get authentic ones anymore, but I have seen them in packages at Kroger. You have to have them for a trifle.

Yes, the reason I brought up the topic was because I have been getting the ones at Kroger that are in packages. They are ok, pretty good but nothing like the fresh ones that I ate as a kid that we got at seessels. I could eat several. Oh so good.

Yes!!! Those were simply the best.

As were the Panchos nacho cheese dip offerings.
I remember locally owned grocery stores, but I digress.
This thread is not what I was hoping it would be.

Fresh macaroons from Seesel's.

My mom made this Lady Finger Cake. It was lined sides and bottom with lady fingers from Seesel's in one of those spring-form pans. Then really rich dark melted down Chocolate and macaroon bits were poured over the lady fingers. Then it got refrigerated.

Served with fresh whipped real cream.....yum

I never liked macaroons, but my mother sure loved the ones at Seessel's. Dad loved the dobosch torte. sp? My favorites were the caramel turtles and the iced little rectangular cakes. Lady cakes? Whooweee.

Petit fours! Those things were addictive.
there are so many recipe requests for seesel's deli/bakery items, i don't know why they don't open a bakery in town. it would do good business.

Ladyfingers Tested Recipe
When I first moved to Memphis we were having some friends over and we were doing cold cuts and chip and dip. A friend said he would stop by Sessel's and pick up some egg rolls. I thought, OK.

So do all of you Memphians know what he referred to as egg rolls from Sessel's. Not what I expected, but what I purchased from then on.

I do miss that Pancho's cheese dip.

This recipe is pretty close for Pancho's

Pancho's-like Cheese Dip

1 can (10 oz.) Ro-Tel brand chiles and tomatoes

1 tsp. garlic powder

1 tsp. ground cumin (this spice is what really makes the Pancho's flavor)

¼ tsp. black pepper

1 lb. Kraft American cheese (see note)

¼ Ro-Tel can of water

Grate the cheese. Mix other ingredients in saucepan. Heat on medium heat to boiling stage, and then lower temperature and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove mixture from heat, and pour it into a blender. Add grated cheese to blender. Blend for 1 minute or until completely smooth. Serve with corn chips.

Note: Kraft American Cheese is packaged in a blue box near Velveeta cheese at grocery stores. It can be hard to find. Use Velveeta if your store doesn't carry i

We make Rotel all the time. Sometimes my wife adds ground beef and sausage. Good stuff.

What I always like about Panchos that you purchased at the store was that it was cold and in the summer it was nice to eat a cool cheese dip.

We also have made Rotel in the blender for a cool dip instead of serving it hot.

The egg rolls that was referring to were actually a sandwich bread, sort of like a dinner roll.
Almost 5 years ago, and I still haven’t found a bakery like Seessel’s. Kroger’s bakery sucks.
