In renovated college stadiums, flashy screens, party decks and Wi-Fi are must-haves for fans

Quote:"With TVs and other reasons that fans have for staying home, you have to create differences for them. They don't want to sit on a bench and hope they don't get rained on."

We continue to fall farther behind with each season we hang to the Liberty Bowl.
There is nothing wrong with the Liberty Bowl. The city invested over 30 million dollars in the Liberty Bowl over the last 5 years. It's only 2 miles from campus, and we pay a tiny rent.

Moreover, if we do get an OCS, I bet they build it on the South Campus, which is no better than going to the Liberty Bowl.
Quote:Each project showcases ways Populous is helping schools to lure fans to their next-generation stadiums in an era where good seats are not enough: enhanced Wi-Fi, better video boards and party decks for socializing. The results are twofold: The flashy facilities offer a better game-day experience while also generating more revenue than their predecessors.

There is something wrong with the Liberty Bowl.

It isn't making us enough money.

It isn't losing us money, either...our tiny rent (35k per game) is offset by not having to pay for maintenance or renovations.

Winning, and selling lots of season tickets would take care of the money situation.

No, it would not. In order to compete, we are going to have to offer the amenities that other schools have. They have multiple levels of suites, party decks, different seating options... It's in the article.

Quote:"The thing about college football is it's this big event where you're rooting for your alma mater," Spear said, "and now your alumni are returning to campus and spending money."

Our competition is making money on football. We aren't. The stadium is by far the biggest reason why. It has been for a long, long time. It still is. It always will be.

This is a half-truth, as has been pointed out time and time again.

Every time the OCS subject is breached you hear the same objections which have adequately been answered. We need one of these buttons on here. [Image: let-me-repeat-myself-button.png]

It does lose us money, however. The stadium has historically been far too big for the school to command anything other than HS ticket prices and the fact that its not on-campus keeps alumni off campus which ultimately lowers alumni giving percentages. The fact that Memphis plays zero major sports on-campus costs the school money... regardless of the rent at municipal facilities.

Thank you. That is as a concise answer as I have seen that actually states the whole problem. People just don't want to hear it, I guess....

Thereby further proving that believing in that rag will mislead you more times than not. I'm not saying they are outright lying. I'm saying they are not FULLY disclosing all the costs. That is just the base rent per game. There are other costs.

that's dangerous.
Click the link below for a copy of a lease. The summary page is for the UofM lease and the actual lease is for the bowl game. My assumption is that both the UofM lease and the bowl game lease have the same terms.

The question is how much revenue do we get from selling suites and selling Jumbotron adds.

If those are profit centers (and they should be) then it actually costs us LESS than $35K per game to rent the stadium.

The $200 per suite/game fee doesn't appear to be in the bowl game lease, but it is on the summary page. It appears the bowl game actually pays $75k.

I would assume we no longer pay the 'jumbotron lease fee' now that it has been retired...moreover, we need to work out a new contract this season (it expires in 2014)

There is still a "jumbotron" with advertising opportunity.
