A few quick notes from my son:

-None of the QBs stood out in his eyes. He said each made some good and bad plays. Said McIntosh threw the ball pretty decent and was super careful with it, pulling down and running with it a lot. Said Hare made some nice throws and then would make some bad ones. Said Maddie looked bad for most of the scrimmage and then threw two nice TD passes at the end. QBs couldn't be touched so hard to get a true read on running ability. If this is accurate I imagine we'll hear from the coaches that no one separated himself and the competition goes on.

-A lot of key guys like Tommylee, DaRon Brown and Akeem didn't play which makes sense to me. Those guys don't have anything to prove.

-Was particularly impressed with Ezra Saffold and Draco Smith, said both were explosive. Hopes to see Ezra and Tommylee on the field together. Keith Harris had a 75 yard TD run, Alex Morrow ran hard as usual. Said Bouagnon and Huff didn't do anything spectacular. Said Christian Blake had several catches and looked good. Was also impressed with Shane Wimann, said he looks ready to play.

-Defense switched a ton of guys out as usual in these scrimmages. Was really impressed with the linebacking corps. Perez Ford blew around the end a few times but the play was immediately blown dead when he was unimpeded to the QB. I think he's going to have a big year. Was impressed with Shawun Lurry, Jawuan Johnson and Darion Henderson at DB. Said Johnson looks great.

-Was really impressed with Tyler Wedel kicking and punting.
If they're really all this close and they've been competing since spring ball (and Hare and McIntosh have been competing since LAST spring ball) is there really any reason to believe anybody is going to separate themself in the next two weeks? I just don't see how that realistically happens. So the question then becomes, who does a tie go to? And my guess is, much like last year, it'll be McIntosh.

Although one could argue if they're really that close throwing the ball, you give it to the best runner of the group.
Okay, I'm worried. The QBs didn't have a good spring game and now mediocre scrimmage.

I think you're reading way too much into bits and pieces of information. You just worried yourself over 1 sentence about each quarterback that is now third hand information. Relax.
Quote:For what it's worth, Matt McIntosh was the first quarterback to take reps and I thought he looked the best out of the three. He made a couple of ill-advised throws but overall was efficient.

Unless something changes, that's your starter folks.

Quote:• Ezra Saffold was the only true freshman wideout that got consistent reps. He's got some quickness and agility to him. Christian Blake got some reps as well.

Quote:Hallmon had an pick-six when all the freshmen took reps. Lurry picked off McIntosh.
I remember going to a scrimmage right about this time in 2012. The offense could not move the ball at all the entire scrimmage. What you see in the scrimmages and during the games can be very different.
Was talking to a friend of mine who is an asset high school coach. He was telling me that there have been a few high school coaches from the western suburbs going to watch niu practice. He said a one of the coaches told him none of the quarterbacks look good. He also said one coach who has seen Maddie play in high school, thought he had got worse, but seemed to be getting back to his old self last couple practices.

So ... what you're saying is nothing that happens right now guarantees anything for the real season? Or is that no longer true because that was two years ago?

Remember that game of telephone, with that message being passed down such a line, the original message could have been "Maddie use to pla;y much worse, NIU has 3 great quarterbacks." I wouldn't trust things like this passed down from person to person to person, its treading into the Shatone's girlfriend territory. Id put more weight in those that have observed the QBs first hand on this board. It sounds like all 3 have been mediocre with flashes of goodness.
For what it's worth, I thought Hare looked the best. Quick releases, agile when running and great accuracy. He was also playing with the 1 string. That's my bet to start.

After 4 years with Harnish and Lynch, if you lower your expectations for whomever ends up starting, you'll worry a lot less.
It comes down to can NIU or any other MAC team win a title without having the best QB in the conference. Recent history says no. But that's why they play the season. IF, Lynch was the third best MAC QB last year would NIU HAVE WON THE mac? I would say no. So lets hope we have a great qb in either MAC or Hare or Maddie! Coach or anyone else can say all they want about having many other play makers. The bottom line is the team with the best qb usually recently anyway wins the MAC!

I see your point, but there is not exactly a whole lot of great QBs out there in the MAC this year, so I don't think it applies to this year really. You could say Schultz I guess, but he is not a great QB really.
