Caught this last night on Fox Sports. Where would ODU football be if we'd gotten football back then?

I want John Castleberry's trench coat. Lol
I think our trajectory would be similar to that of ECU if football had started back then.
Probably still in FCS

I can't remember (happens a lot nowadays!) but I think that was when we were asked to put our money up for season tickets with the promise of an immediate refund if plan did not come to fruition. We immediately send in money for two season tix. When it fell thru we got a call asking us to donate that money to other programs. We said, "Hell no". We always thought it was a ploy since we knew Jarrett was never for football. He would have to be dragged kicking and screaming into it if it ever happened.
My father and Dr. Franklin jones were on the original committee to bring football back to odu.

According to him, both Jarrett and the then president (forget his name) shut them down at every turn.

He also said he nearly cried at the first home game he attended when we restarted football because it was a passion and dream of his finally realized by the University. Thank god we finally had a visionary president take charge and lead us to where we are now!
was it Koch back then? I remember he was anti football and never gave it a second thought. I also heard a rumor that one of his kids was hurt playing football and that was one of the reasons. I have no idea if that was true or not.

I believe it was Koch yes, but I'm not 100% on that one.
Dr. Marchello left in 1988 and was replaced by Dr. Spong, interim president 1989-90, then we got Koch in 1990. The one constant through those years was a very much against it (ODU football) Dr. Jarrett. Someone told me back in '88 that when the NCAA approved his idea for a new football division he was shocked and not in a good way. He never dreamed the NCAA would vote for it and believed ODU football would die when the NCAA turned it down. Alas the turmoil of 3 Presidents in 3 years ending with Koch who shared Dr. Jarrett's view that football was a giant mistake for ODU was enough to kill it for another 20 years.03-weeping
Good history. ODU was a much different place in 1988. The campus, vision and alumni base has transformed since then. At that time, the signature athletic building was a 4000 seat field house and the athletics teams resided in a falling apart Sun Belt Conference. Hampton Blvd was a hodgepodge of bars. One could argue Jarrett was right then about not being ready ... Yet. The Ted, campus and student body transformation had to happen first??

Or one could argue it might have initiated this change earlier and we might be in a conference with Ecu right now.

Honestly, who knows? But it's hard to argue with the results and trajectory we are currently experiencing.
