Quote:Cincinnati's freshmen big men will have major role this year

There's a bit of a stigma on the college basketball circuit that the Bearcats don't have talented players in their program and their success is merely a product of simply playing harder than their opponent. That's not entirely true.

After watching Cincinnati practice last week before it departs for a trip to the Bahamas, the intensity level that the Bearcats' program exudes on a daily basis is beyond palpable, but that doesn't mean it's the only reason why Mick Cronin's squad has advanced to four consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Cincinnati has found its niche by recruiting hard-nosed kids who win 50-50 plays with regularity, but it also has improved the overall skill level of its front court with two incoming freshmen in Gary Clark and Quadri Moore.

Both Clark and Moore were ranked in the Top 100 of most recruiting services out of high school and both will get a major opportunity to play in their first season of college basketball. The 6-foot-7 Clark is a long, pogo-stick type power forward that will be an all-league caliber player by the time he's a junior. The 6-8 Moore, meanwhile, is cut from a completely different cloth than any of his frontcourt predecessors that have played for Cronin at Cincinnati.

Broad shouldered and skilled, Moore has a lethal face-up game that extends all the way to the three-point line. While he still has a ways to go defensively, the New Jersey native will pose a problem for opposing five men because of his ability to step away from the basket on offense and open up seams in the defense.

With the departures of both Justin Jackson and Titus Rubles from last year's squad that won 27 games, the Bearcats will need to get mileage out of both Clark and Moore if they're to return to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive season.

That portion right there is intriguing. Wonder what he means by that.

The following sentence explains it

I think rothstein is dead on and plenty of people around here have said the same thing. The talent needs to improve. I think this class is micks most talented yet. Hopefully they help uc take the next step.

IMO that description of Moore is exactly how I'd describe yancy's game.

Wait...did you just say Yancy Gates had a "lethal face up game to the 3-point line?" Are you alright, man? You don't sound too good...
Moore is probably the most well rounded big Mick has had.
He's not hyper athletic, he's like the kind of power forward you would see on a Big 10 team. Good shot, solid handle, good passer. He's skill more than hops or speed. Don't expect flashy... If that makes sense.

Yancy was very coordinated and had a soft touch for a big guy but this is very different.

If you asked Mick who was the best 3PT shooter on this entire team, he might very well say Quadri. I would give anything to have Yancy back but for what he can do defensively and from 12 feet in.

Ha. I should have said yancy played a similar style. Yancy had the body of Danny fortson but never looked that comfortable on the block or with his back to the basket. Yancy definitely prefered to face up or shoot from 10-12 feet out.

Yes. The major point is that Quadri is MUCH better at the face-up game than Yancy. But, yes, Yancy definitely PREFERRED to play that kind of game.

Most of all, agree with Eastside. Reluctant as he was about it, Yancy became a very reliable paint guy on both ends of the court. We have really been missing that sort of presence since he left.

No doubt about it. Hopefully the days of forcing a square peg into a round hole are done. My expectations for this year are pretty low but I'm very excited about next year.
Speaking of hoops...When is the last time we had a true, big time, low post banger? Hicks?
I don't think Quadri plays significant minutes this year. Hope he redshirts...

Why? He brings a unique skill set that makes us a better offensive team. I understand with his defense not being ready he won't play 20+ minutes but we can certainly use his offense.

I'm hoping none of the big men redshirt. First-year JUCO's have really struggled, so I'd rather have as many options as possible to mix and match down low.
I really have no idea what to expect from the new guys. If I'm a betting man I'd say somewhat of a contribution but nothing out of this world. Sort of how Troy Caupain was last year- a very pleasant surprise. I see no Jabari Parkers among the newcomers.

Agree. The skill set of each big on the roster is distinct and diverse. If each of the five new bigs can bring something to the table, why not utilize it to the fullest?

Yes we know you think that. You have been posting that since at least April.

You also wanted Kevin Johnson to redshirt before last season.

Yeah, I was surprised KJ beat Morman out. I expected Morman to be the best of the 3 freshman guards last year. It would be nice if that came true because the other two have already shown a lot of promise.

The logic still holds for this years team though. Ultimately, if you simply aren't going to play a rotation of 12 people. There aren't enough minutes to go around. At most it will be 10 and more likely it will be 8 or 9 regulars.

When looking at our big men, I expect Ellis to be the best/most important of the group. And I think Deberry will play a decent amount. I expect Gary Clarke to be better and more prepared for the college game than Moore. And Sanders and Shaq will probably play some 4 in some small lineups.

That doesn't leave a lot of time remaining for Moore and Strickland. Strickland has basically been basketball-less for 3 of the last 4 years. And I think Moore will take some time to adjust to the physicality and athletic nature of the college game.

It's great he is supposed to be a really good shooter. We could definitely use that. But its not smart to waste a year of eligibility for a couple of minutes a game. And I don't think Moore will be good enough to offer more than that.

Things can certainly change though. It's not like a decision has to be made before the trip to the Bahamas.
KJ didn't "beat Morman out," Morman got injured.

Mick mentioned wanting Morman to redshirt well before he actually got injured. He was going to leave the final say up to morman, but when he got injured it just solidified it.
