In Paul Myerberg's wrap-up of his Toledo Rocket article for USA Today, he included the following remark:

"I'm just not certain if the Rockets have that certain something, the inner toughness, fortitude and confidence needed to reverse this distressing and frustrating four-year run against the MAC's premier program [i.e., NIU]".

And after their last game of the 2013 season I have to agree with him until shown otherwise. When it comes to "Toledo Tough", they seem to have the "talk the talk" part down pat but the "walk the walk" part still needs a bit of work-----maybe this is the year that they get part right too.

If "Toledo Tough" proves to be more than just a catchy phase then this team and this season could be very special with some remarkable achievements, otherwise it is probably just another ho-hum "close but no cigar" type year that we have become all too accustomed to seeing for the past several years.

You talking about the game with the Akron team that lost at Michigan by 4,
lost@NIU by 7, lost @BGSU by a smaller margin than NIU did? AKron was 16 points away from being 8-4 last season(that would have included wins over the #11 and #23 ranked teams).

No, I am talking about the game with the Akron team that lost to Ohio by 40 points and to Ball State by 18 points and by 17 to BG. Akron is definitely improving under Bowden, but I am not quite willing to accept those kind of losses just yet; not given the Rockets potential---I think that they were still hung up on the NIU loss and forgot to get off the bus for the Akron game----that's my story and I am sticking to it. If you are OK with that loss and find it acceptable, that is fine me, but I am not quite to that point yet.

+1. No way should Toledo have lost that game. A bowl game was on the line and they blew it.
I see this both ways (easy to do in sports LOL). We had no business losing that game as we were the better team last year, albeit we were not the same team without Flu. And after Kareem was hobbled in that game after giving it his all, we were even less the same team. But, we were still bigger, stronger, faster, and more experienced...

On the other hand, Akron is becoming competitive fast, just as most knew they would, given Bowden the time. Well that time has passed and Akron will likely complete for the East this year and may be back as perennial contender in the MAC. We caught them at their peak last year, and they were hungry at home.

Bottom line: let's be happy we play UMass instead of Akron this year03-lmfao
My point is that although Rockets should have won that game, acknowledge the fact that the Zips were a better team than they have
been lately.
That game was definitely one of the factors I took under consideration in making the decision to sell the Jambulance, and also downgrade season tickets to a fan plan this season. Very disappointing performance and made me seriously question branding Toledo football as "Toledo Tough".

+1 We, also, did not renew our season tickets after many years. We'll take it a game at a time.

Well stated! That is exactly the point I was trying to make in my first post. It is all well and good to talk about "Toledo Tough" in a string of advertisements, but there also has to be a follow up on the field if it is to be more than just a marketing ploy-----I am talking about "mental toughness" and the discipline necessary to get up for every game, week after week after week which is not an easy task but one that often separates the champion from an also ran.

But, as Gary Pinkel used to say, "the good news is" that UT has another chance this year to demonstrate their toughness. IMO this team has the potential (with a little luck) to have one of those rare type seasons that only comes along once in long while which in itself should provide them with ample incentive to exhibit that necessary toughness.
All I can say is I hope we have recruited an excellent QB somewhere in the mix. Next, figuring out who has winning as their #1 priority and fielding those players. Anybody else should sit, regardless of how talented they are or how long they have been in the program.

I'll probably renew my season tix, mainly because I like my seats and I think we could have a really exciting team if we have a good QB.

Wow. Now, that says a lot.

I think we have three outstanding candidates fighting it out for the right to start behind what is potentially a super offensive line. They all have brilliant resumes so we should be able to get at least one (and hopefully more) out of that group that will look as good on the field as they do on paper. Of course they all lack experience, but remember that Terrance Owens played some of his best ball back when he first came in as a young inexperienced player.

Don't forget true freshman Quentin Gibson from Louisiana. That makes four.
I give credit to Campbell for helping to raise UT from the muck. They are winning games, recruiting well, performing in the classroom, and beating BG. However, programs with momentum and focus win big games and finish seasons. Toledo has yet to win big games consistently, has yet win against a great QB, and didn't finish the season last year, which kept them from going bowling. I know Akron was playing better, even though the wins were against nobody of importance, but you have to finish the season. They will have to do it this year, before row-row-row-your-boat gets his young talent together. This season will tell if Campbell will be great coach or just a decent coach, who recruits well.

Dollars to donuts, Gibson red-shirts.
