Nearly 40 arrested in 'mild' aftermath of Ohio State win

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Police arrested nearly 40 people and dozens of fires were set in student neighborhoods, but authorities reported a relatively smooth night following No. 1 Ohio State's 42-39 win over second-ranked Michigan.
The roughly 40 fires were set mostly on cars and furniture, along with a few in trash bins, said Lt. Dan Ranney of the Columbus fire department. Some were set before the game started, he said.
"Believe it or not, this was pretty mild so far, for as big as this game was," Ranney said.
By early Sunday, police had arrested about 40 people in the student areas around campus, including four for arson, said Sgt. Kevin Corcoran.
The city banned parking, emptied trash bins and removed couches from porches in some neighborhoods near campus in hopes of avoiding a repeat of 2002 when fans rioted after Ohio State beat Michigan en route to the national championship.
Rick Amweg, assistant university police chief, said Ohio State officers had made no arrests following the game as of early Sunday.
"We have had a very quiet night on campus," he said.
The win gave undefeated Ohio State its first outright Big Ten title since 1984 and a spot in the national title game on Jan. 8 in Glendale, Ariz. The Wolverines can still make it to the title game if the Bowl Championship Series standings break their way.
I love how 40 people being arrested is being considered mild. And dozens of fires being set around student neighborhoods, and 40 something fires being set to trash bins, furnitures and cars is being called nothing because everything happened BEFORE the game, thus everything went "relatively smooth" according to the authorities! lmfao And it's being called a "quiet night". I guess because only half the city burned to the ground! lmfao

Thank you! I really honestly thought UC fans would be focused on, ya know, the biggest win in UC football history instead of complaining about OSU. I sometimes wonder if some of you spend more time brooding angrily about OSU than you do cheering on UC.

Considering I don't mention Ohio State that much, and actually predicted them to beat Michigan, the last thing you can call me is a consistent Ohio State basher. I don't know where that came from.

Yeah, because I don't have ANY threads on the UC and Big East message board talking about the UC game, attendance, and potential bowl appearances. Ohio State fans are so sensitive. Why not enjoy YOUR big win instead of worrying about UC fans are saying about you? Because you know it IS possible to talk about multiple things. You know, it's possible for me to talk about UC AND Ohio State right?

Never said you were. I asked you to compliment your own team instead of wasting everybody's time b!tching about somebody elses. Claw, I've got a lot of respect for you......but you need to be happy for UC instead of wasting your time worrying about what's going on in CBus. Just enjoy the win and go from there. OSU is not your concern.
The original poster of this was a Notre Dame fan, as cujo knows. Notice cujo didn't rip that Notre Dame fan who was criticizing Ohio State fans. This is also being discussed by Michigan fans and West Virginia fans among countless other fans. I'm curious, do those fans have a "hard-on" for Ohio State? Because I personally don't care about Ohio State other then a fact that they make national news for having one football riot per year. If that's having a hard-on for them, well, maybe you and your Buckeyes brethren should consider finding a different way to celebrate? Oh, believe me, I'm enjoying my big win. And OSU fans really aren't sensitive at all........that's actually their problem, they're viciously insensitive. Insensitive to the point that we burn down our own town when we win. But alas, my point still stands, why are you shatting on another team when yours just got their biggest ever?

We just polished off our archrival in the game of the century and now we're going to the National Championship game. Like I said, I don't expect you to know what that's like. Oh I've got no issues with people on here talking about how the game didn't live up to the hype, etc. I've seen that and that doesn't make me mad at all, hell, it didn't really live up to the hype with me either. Commentary is fine. Going out of your way to talk trash about a team, though, to me is stupid.

Exactly. Now we have to deal with Ohio State fans trying to lecture us because we're just talking about a riot they had that injured people and destroyed property. All kidding aside that's sick and scary and I'm glad I don't live near there after a OSU/Michigan game.
