Putin just one-upped America's liberals in who can deem words unworthy of speaking and he's backing it up with fines. But hey, if we did that here there would be no rap music.

Quote:Moscow (AFP) - Russians have endured countless crackdowns on their freedoms, but a legal ban on using their vast vocabulary of swear words has really got them hot under the collar.

This month's law against swearing in films, theatre and the media has propelled the controversial subject to the forefront of public debate and brought together critics and loyalists of President Vladimir Putin.

At the heart of the discourse is Russia's hugely potent lexicon of obscenities known as "mat," which is centred on four taboo words and an infinite number of their variations.

Describing female and male private parts and sexual intercourse, the words sound more offensive than their English-language equivalents, are considered unprintable and usually bleeped on TV.

What words are banned by law in this country? We recognize that people have a right to speak, but they aren't to be excused from public ridicule or opposition as a result of that speech.
OP is just further proof that republicans live in a world that only they can see......
Liberals always restrict free speech. As well as the number of fluid ounces in a drink, ......in Russia or the US.

"Always"? How about one example regarding speech?

The real haters of free speech vis a vis Russia are the supporters of Putin's ban on saying anything in public that is not anti-Gay. Those groups and persons include

Family Research Council, American Family Association, World Congress of Families, Family Watch International, Liberty Counsel, Mat Staver, Matt Barber, Tony Perkins, Scott Lively, Austin Ruse, C-FAM, and many others.
Tranny for example or Queer or Sodomite is now referred to as "gay" correct? Word and thought police are alive and well in the USA.

There's a huge difference between banning a word or statement (which is what Putin is doing - with the support of much of the US religious right) and allowing people to say it, but allowing others to use their free speech rights to criticize, condemn, and ridicule said speech.

Example please?
There are words in this country that will get your life destroyed if you uttered them publicly.

Give me a friggin break. In this country if a person says the wrong word his political career is over, his business is boycotted, they take away his basketball team, and the government revokes your trademark. At least with Putin you just pay your fine and move on.

But you still can say them, legally. That's the difference between Putin's proposals/legislation in Uganda/Nigeria/Cameroon/Zimbabwe (supported by many on the right in the US) and any kind of PC.

Trust me, lots of people got fired for saying "Gay is Okay" in public. Or had their lives ruined for that. They felt that the speech they were making was worth it because they believed in it. Free speech isn't consequence free speech.

I stand corrected.

People have a right to not patronize Piggy Park or Chick-Fil-A or Hobby Lobby because they feel that the speech of the owners or businesses personally offend them. People have a right to judge candidates for elective office based upon their speech.

With regards to the NBA, I'm not sure about how those contracts are setup. But I would say that the Orlando Magic owner and the Utah Jazz owner have said/done equally offensive things without retribution by the league. I'd have to see how the contract between the owners and NBA is setup. And if the Clippers owner feels that he has been treated unfairly, he is free to sue. I'm sure he has access to adequate counsel.

With regards to the Redskins, a trademark can be challenged on a variety of reasons, including if another group feels that it has some sort of 'ownership' of that trademark (for example for having 'red skin'). As of yet, the trademark hasn't been revoked. Here's the relevant code, in place long before this became controversial....

"No trademark by which the goods of the applicant may be distinguished from the goods of others shall be refused registration . . . unless it– Consists of or comprises immoral, deceptive, or scandalous matter; or matter which may disparage or falsely suggest a connection with persons, living or dead, institutions, beliefs, or national symbols, or bring them into contempt, or disrepute . . ."

So you can say the word N-----, but no, you cannot trademark that word.

So can we say that California now officially the USSCaliforniaR then?

California removes Husband and Wife terms from all state law:

Quote:The terms “husband” and “wife” have been deleted from California’s marriage law
under a bill signed into law Monday by Gov. Jerry Brown.

The terms will be replaced with “spouse” to accommodate same-sex marriage, which became legal in the state last year after the Supreme Court struck down a voter-approved ban on it.

SB1306, the bill signed Monday by Brown, takes effect Jan. 1…

The bill was authored by state Sen. Mark Leno of San Francisco, who said Monday…“This legislation removes outdated and biased language from state codes and recognizes all married spouses equally, regardless of their gender.”

I mean hell, if Russia makes it illegal to use various terminology in their speech, what does this make California?
California is not a good example, they are nuts out there.
