I'm back from a great vacation in the mountains, so let's finish out discussions on week one's games

There have been years in the past when this match up would have been a much anticipated game with a Golden Eagles' win a real possibility. But this year's Southern Miss @ Mississippi State game probably is catching both teams at difficult times.

Mississippi State may well be a very under-rated team this year. I've read some accounts where the Bulldogs might well win 9 or 10 games and go to a major bowl. In any event, they have a dynamite quarterback and return 18 starters back from a team that kicked around Rice (our conference champ) last year in the Liberty Bowl. They are going to be a stronger team in the SEC West this year, it seems.

Southern Miss, on the other hand, is still rebounding, but is still one or two seasons away, I think, from returning to perennial contention for the C-USA crown. While I personally think USM will be much improved, particularly if they can find the right QB who starts strong and develops through the season, I think winning this game is a bit much to ask for USM. I think a minimum of 4 wins is a real possibility (which would be a strong performance on the way back to football dominance, imo), but I don't see this game as being one of the wins.

Out of all the years that southern miss has fielded great football teams that would have pounded miss state, they have to come on to the schedule at this low point. just damn man, just damn. makes me sick

No the reason the game was scheduled is purely political. The gov of Mississippi is one of our alum. Should he get reelected, he would be the first gov to be able to appoint a full board of 12 members. Its more about the 2 of us limiting the power of the boys from the Oxford center for judicial bribery and bar tending.

Ok - then it's just bad timing and I hope that you'll beat those dawgs this year!

This.. I get the feeling the governor pulled some strings to make sure this matchup was done. I dont' think he'd be able to do the same with Ole Piss though...

Yes, these games were actually scheduled when Fedora was still at Southern Miss.

With the admission that I have done no analysis, I suspect State wins this one be 21 or more. Best wishes to you Golden Eagles, and I hope you prove me wrong.

Lol.. You are one sicko for sure... Keep it up
These games were scheduled years ago when we were competitive, so, guess again. The funny thing about the internet is that you can post anything, either truthful or a lie.

QB is not our problem if Mullens stays healthy. He played well as a freshmen behind a horrible O line. He looked really good in the spring and should get better over the summer working with the receivers.

The main thing we need is major improvement on the O line and somebody to step up at RB. The defense should be much improved with Cotton and Howse back. If they can stay healthy and we can develop depth at LB we will surprise some people. Our problem last year IMO was not talent but inexperience. By the end of the year we were playing 17 true and redshirt freshman, almost a JV team. That experience is going to payoff but we'll have to see if it's this year or next. With that said you're probably right and we take an axe beating to start the season but you never know. If Monken can put the old Southern Miss tude back in them we could make a game of it.
When State wins this game, and they will, the all time series will be tied. Only questions are what will be the margin of victory and how will our fanbase react.

Gut feeling says I will be disappointed in both. Love my Eagles but it is what it is.

That's how we felt about WVU through the Snyder years.
I'd honestly be surprised if we lose by less than 35. Mullen is not going to call off the horses in the 3rd quarter like everyone else did last season. He will run it up as much as possible.
