FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Matt Jones doesn't get many opportunities to deliver the big hit on the football field, but the junior quarterback did some damage at basketball practice Thursday.

Jones, a reserve forward who joined the basketball team last week, broke a rim on a dunk, stopping practice for 20 minutes while a new one was installed. He didn't tear it off the backboard, but the collapsable rim wouldn't snap back into place.

Arkansas coach Stan Heath said Jones, who scored two points with two rebounds and two assists in Saturday's win over North Texas and didn't play in the loss to LSU on Tuesday, had his best practice.

"He tore off one of the rims," Heath said. "He was aggressive, made some good moves around the basket and posted up. He still has some things he needs to learn, but he can get some things done just on his natural athletic ability."

The 6-foot-6 Jones didn't play basketball in Heath's first season so he could rest a sore shoulder and knee. When he was a freshman, he played on Nolan Richardson's final team, averaging 4.2 points and 2.3 rebounds in 11 games.
