Quote:U.S. patent office cancels Redskins trademark registration, says name is disparaging

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has canceled the Washington Redskins trademark registration, calling the football team’s name “disparaging to Native Americans.”

The landmark case, which appeared before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, was filed on behalf of five Native Americans. It was the second time such a case was filed.

“This victory was a long time coming and reflects the hard work of many attorneys at our firm,” said lead attorney Jesse Witten, of Drinker Biddle & Reath.

Federal trademark law does not permit registration of trademarks that “may disparage” individuals or groups or “bring them into contempt or disrepute.” The ruling pertains to six different trademarks associated with the team, each containing the word “Redskin.”

“We are extraordinarily gratified to have prevailed in this case,” Alfred Putnam Jr., the chairman of Drinker Biddle & Reath, said. “The dedication and professionalism of our attorneys and the determination of our clients have resulted in a milestone victory that will serve as an historic precedent.”

They should now change their name to the Blackhorses.
So, I guess they have done the same thing with the Braves, Indians, etc?

Yeah, historically retarded. How much more sensitive can one get.

Let me now use the ideology of a civil rights activist and say "Yall are the ones who took our land and killed our people off, now you take our name off of something huge, why?" As a part Native American, I find great offense in the U/S Patent office cancelling the Redskins trademark.
This doesn't mean that they have to change the name, just that they don't have the trademark on the term and thus won't be able to prevent people/organizations from creating their own merchandise with the name/logo.

If Dan Snyder losses the appeal that he almost certainly will make, I imagine the name will be changed fairly recently after.
Change it to the Washington Crony Capitalist.

Well, that in of itself is huge when you think of the $$$$ involved.
Those Republicans aren't looking so bad now, are they?

This is what you get when you empower progressives. Our country will fall into a never ending social battle as we crumble from the inside. The left will never stop creating battles like this and they will become increasingly more meaningless.
The language they quoted from the rules are the same general terms used for libel. So, what has actually been said here is that the Redskins name is libel.

What? That makes very little Constitutional sense.

What does from the Obama administration?

Probably not becuase neither term is deemed offensive and disparaging (yet).

Anybody who thought the government wouldn't eventually get involved and do something like this was delusional.

Hopefully they don't name the next team something lame, like the Wizards.

I wonder what Native Americans who are more than 1/64th N.A. think about the subject?

I think if the Native American community as a majority/whole is offended by the name, then I wouldn't be against a name change....don't know if it's true or not though.
we need elizabeth warren to wade into this controversy about exploiting native american heritage for personal gain.

Yup, but I think the MLB pretty much told the Indians not to use the Chief Wahoo logo much anymore....there's been considerable backlash the last few years about that too.

the NfL is going to raise holy hell about this one i do believe... it's not just Snyder, it's the entire organization that's going to go ballistic over this decision.
They should keep the name, but change the logo from the Indian to a sun-burnt white guy with buck teeth.
Admin want to merge these threads?

Maybe they ought to use a photo of the Verizon tech support staff instead.

Actually, a name change would result in a huge infusion of cash for Snyder. some fans will resist buying new hats, jerseys etc, but almost all will eventually. Redskin memoribilia will sky rocket in worth.
