Some of us remember Bob Welch from his days at EMU when the team went to the College World Series (Unfortunately there was no ESPN back then).

And age 57 is very young for a person to die.
Bob Welch and his teammates put EMU in the limelight no one had really even heard of the school before the College World Series. I'm sorry to see that he passed away. I hope we hire a baseball coach that put us at least in the running for a NCAA berth.

I too would like to see EMU baseball become more competitive.

What shocks (although I don't know why) is how poorly schools outside of the sun belt do in the College World Series, including Big Ten schools (they don't do well either).

Beyond the 1970s, other than Wichita State, not a non-sun belt team has been to the finals of the CWS. It is as bad or worse than trying to get a Triple Crown winner.

Kent State and Stony Brook making it to Omaha a few years ago was a shocker.
Lots of articles everywhere on Bob's passing. He was a class act.
