There are usually several upsets on the first day of the NCAA baseball tournament. Every #1 regional seed is playing at home and expected to advance to the super regionals next weekend, and some of them are tight in their first game.
I remember Jackson State in the tournament a few years ago -- they looked like the team tonight. A bunch of smaller, fast guys who draw walks and run, run, run once they get on base.
Florida State also lost at home tonight, to Georgia Southern.
Miami, at home, beat Bethune-Cookman a few minutes ago, 1-0 on a passed ball with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
BTW, for anyone who has UVerse, ESPN is running a "Bases Loaded" channel this weekend that is like NFL RedZone for the college baseball tournament. Really good coverage.

Lose that first game and it's a tough road to hoe. You have to win 4 straight games to advance.

I have UVerse and i'm digging the bases loaded channel. Much better than Cox or Brighthouse.

I do get WatchESPN, that's how I watched the end of the ULL - Jax State game.

Are you really proposing that the Big Ten have its own incestious "championship" months after the regionals, super regionals and College World Series?
Maryland made the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1971 and made the Super Regionals and will face off against Virginia to go to the College World series. The old coach left to go to Michigan and the program looked to be dead but and all the hard work and effort the new coach has put in will all be negated because the Big Ten will kill all that momentum the program has built. They went 15-14 in the ACC during the regular season and got a 2 seed!. You cant go 15-14 in the Big Ten and even get a bid.

Indiana is currently very good at baseball. Nebraska is good. Maryland seems to be up and coming. Purdue & Illinois have had relatively high levels of success in recent years. Ohio State, Michigan & Minnesota have all made the NCAA and won multiple games in the NCAA within the past 10 years (Michigan won a regional by defeating #1-seeded Vanderbilt and David Price). Penn State made a super-regional back in 2000.
There's a good base for our conference --- no reason we shouldn't be a perennial 2-3 bid conference with teams making an occasional run to Omaha (like Indiana last year).

What we have is an obvious inherent disadvantage. The coldest month of the year is February and we're playing friggin baseball. You can't tell me that southern and western teams don't like the advantage and don't make use of it recruiting northern and eastern kids. We have some solid teams, sure. But what are we averaging in attendance, and can you imaging why? Furthermore, I don't think we'd be alone, the northern portion of the Big12, ACC, AAC, the whole MAC, the whole Big East and tons of other schools feel the disadvantage.
So what I'm proposing is essentially two separate baseball seasons, one for those with the God Given weather advantage (Let's call it Spring); and a separate season for the area of the country that believes playing baseball at home in February and March is stupid (We'll call that Summer).

On a truly level playing field, the B1G should be a 4 - 6 bid league. It's no secret that playing the first 6 weeks on the road hampers the league with usually insurmountible loss totals.
If the Big 10 wanted to spend the money, they could alleviate some of the start date problems by going to going to southern states in the early season and hosting games against teams from other northern conferences.
Or could start building small domes. Could probably build a passable indoor baseball stadium for about 150% of the cost of an indoor football practice field.

Yeah, and Ohio State's athletic department spends more money every week than Kennesaw State or Pepperdine (who just won their NCAA baseball regionals) spends all year, so it would be silly for Ohio State to complain about the cost of that.
The weather complaint is a red herring. The real challenge is that midwestern/northeastern schools have to work harder to find elite high school baseball talent, which is far more plentiful in California and the Sun Belt.
But that challenge is exactly what California or Florida schools would face if they wanted to have NCAA ice hockey programs good enough to consistently reach the Frozen Four. It's just that the elite high-school-age talent in a particular sport is concentrated in a particular region of the country. No more and no less than that.
