Starting in 2015, the AAC will have 2 different 6 - team divisions.

The divisions will be geographic in nature, split into east and west, except Navy will be in the west.
So stoked. ECU, Cincy, and USF every year!

Smart move by Navy, IMHO. Texas is LOADED with patriotic families and talented football players. I believe they'll do quite well in that division.

Navy was going to be OK regardless of division.

After reading how much Navy wants to play in Texas, the B12 went after the wrong service academy.....

Aha, that's how they solve "the UC problem" ~ that is, that UC wants to play in Florida every year, so wants to be in the East, but on a pure geographic split is the easternmost team in the West.
Well so much for the AAC division debate

I thought they would wait to see whether championship deregulation passed before making a move so they wouldn't have to screw with divisions. At least that is what I would do.

Not bad, not bad at all.

That might be what you would do, but both the western and the eastern schools wanted divisions.

The only problem seemed to be that, given UC's preferences to be in the East, that looked like 5 schools for the West and 7 for the East.

But if Navy's situation makes them rather play in the West, that makes a 6/6 that leaves everybody happy, so it would be idiotic to wait.
Navy isnt coming on board until 2015 so there is no issue with waiting another 6 months to decide divisions.

What is interesting with this is it largely dictates that any new addition to backfill UC or UConn will have to come from the East to keep that 6/6 pattern going.

Any word on whether there will be fixed rivals? It would be possible to guarantee an East Division member a game in Texas every year with a 9-game schedule and 2 fixed rivals:

Years 1/3:
@SMU
Houston
@Tulsa/@Tulane
Memphis/Navy

Years 2/4:
SMU
@Houston
Tulsa/Tulane
@Memphis/Navy

You could swap Cincinnati and Navy, and have Navy take both SMU and Houston as permanent crossovers, while Cincinnati takes both USF and UCF.

Nah they're just going to stick with the 5-3.
Good fit for navy with 3 private schools. With cincy not wanting to go west this was the next best choice
Really glad USF & UCF are in the same division! Also interesting the USF, UC, & UConn are all in the same division... aren't they the 3 schools splitting around 100 MIL in exit fees? Could be a heck of an arms race!

Not necessarily. They can always reshuffle the divisions. Other conferences have done it.
They got it right.

Best combo of geography, traveling fans, rivalries, and recruiting IMO.
9 of the 12 schools were old CUSA, so it looks very familiar to most.

The break out looks right, need to keep the schools as close as possible for the fans, because I don't see many SMU fans traveling to Temple or Uconn fans traveling to Tulsa. The conference is far too broad with not enough fans, so the regional style was very, very smart.

Sure but it is a pain to announce twice.

But there's no overall benefit in waiting ... its better to have it in place before the preceding football season starts, since like most any other brand equity investment, the more impressions before launch day, the better, and most impressions for the AAC are going to come as incidental discussion during football coverage ... "these two teams will be division rivals next year when the American adds Navy and a Conference Championship game".

And the AAC going for the lower overall benefit in the decision would be pretty foolish.

It does introduce a bias, but "dictate" is going overboard ... if a shuffle is just one school, that leaves most of the marketing investment in the divisions intact.
I will enjoy Navy coming to Houston regularly, nice... I like the West setup, well done AAC.
