...in US history, which would it be? Let's assume you can only include candidates of the two major parties of the time and that you cannot change the nominees. I'll start by choosing Goldwater over LBJ.
Taft or T.R. (preferably Taft, but either one) instead of Wilson in 1912.
Al Gore over W...
I've always been curious what would have happened if G.W. Bush lost the first election.
Robert Toombs over Jefferson Davis.
Romney over O.
Gore over W. No question. We would have never gone into Iraq and probably would have saved thousands of American lives.

I'll say Douglas over Lincoln.

I wonder how things would have been in the U.S. without a Civil War? No, really. How long would it have taken before the south gave the slaves their freedom? Eventually I think it would have happened and all those lives would not have been lost in a war.

Every other country in Europe, or that had been colonized by a European power, had ended slavery by 1900. None of them needed a war to do it except the U.S.
Nixon over Kennedy would have caused significant ripples in the stream of history:

- Niether JFK or RFK would have been assassinated (at at least their assassinations would have been delayed)
- The Kennedy dynasty would have likely been pushed into the 70's
- No Bay of Pigs fiasco
- No President LBJ or the Great Society
- Vietnam would not have been esculated because Nixon would have continued the policies from the Eisenhower administration
-Watergate may have never happened.
Slaves aren't cheap. You have to feed and house them. Would have been much cheaper to give them an equivalent of a $10 per hour paycheck and let the government pick up the rest of the slack. I know there was money in the actual trade for the intermediaries, but I never understood why that business model ever really worked for the farmers. I'd imagine someone would have figured that out and crushed the competition.

Interesting thoughts.
Whoever introduced income tax and replace him with someone who wouldn't. Even if it got brought in later everyone would probably pay less now and the government would likely be more responsible in spending.

That is an interesting question, but as much of a freaking lunatic algore has turned out to be, I don't think we'd have wanted to find out.

I would have taken Goldwater over LBJ all day, but she's spoken for. I'll go HW over his Slickness. Bush Sr. was/is about as fine a man, and dedicated public servant, as one could dream up in some Mr. Potatohead or Frankenstein type game. A piece of this, some of that, you create the ideal citizen.

Clinton wasn't the unmitigated disaster (other than personally and lying to the Courts) that I had feared, that waited another 16 years. But we most certainly fired a fine man in 1992.
Heck, I would have taken Carter over Obama, that's how much I despise his administration.

We'd probably belong to the Middle East. We didn't get attacked by terrorists just because Gore wasn't elected. Had Gore won, we'd probably have gotten wave after wave of terrorist attacks.
