i don't ve a dog in this, but my observation is that UVA perception is the rivals are UNC and VT, (even if they look down on the Hokies) and its a Commonwealth thang.

You all will see, UVA perception of Louisville is the same as NC State Clemson and Wake, another academic inferior institution, that UVA HAS to play/
As we will see them as another P5 school that can't get it together on the field and will only bring our SOS down like our instate rival....shots fired!
Who UVA, do they play football? 07-coffee3

Hmmm. Since 1989 Virginia and Clemson have played 19 games and Virginia won 8, Clemson won 10, and one was a tie. Before the last three seasons when UVa has been down and lost three straight, UVa actually had a winning record against the Tigers 8-7. And in terms of being conference champions, Virginia won two ACC championships and Clemson won two. So, if Virginia has not being really playing football, what has Clemson being doing for most of the last 20 years?

Oh, and by the way, UNC is always more hype than on the field results as well. UVa is 16 and 9 against them since 1989 and again, the last 3 years have been losses that have improved UNC's record from just 6 wins against the Cavs. And UNC has been champions a total of zero in that time as well.

The performance of Clemson and UNC with all their talent, is underwhelming. But now UVa is getting a couple of great recruiting classes going these last two years and soon may be resurgent in the league.

The Cavaliers look forward to the rivalry that develops with UL and suggest Cardinal fans not buy into the hype of the "name" teams that media love to follow. There is a good chance Virginia will have as good of a record against Louisville as they have against Clemson or UNC and, if so, it should be a good rivalry.
Looks its going to take a while for the rivalry to establish itself. Maybe after a few years it will become a hyped game.

Nice of you to pick 1989, before that Clemson won 29 in a row, so that makes you guys 8-39 vs Clemson!!! GRATZ???

Since 1999 UVA is 1-14 versus VT including a current 10 game losing streak, so imo the question "does UVA even play football" is legitimate.

One last thing. Louisville (and VT for that matter) can only dream of having the academic perception of WF.

Virginia fans think football started in 1989.

Kinda like South Carolina fans think it started in 2009.

Of course you can keep going back further in time and get different results, but I thought the most relevant time period is mainly since FSU joined the league, but I went three years earlier since both UVa and Clemson had won championships in those three years. But if we start in 1992 when FSU began playing then UVa and Clemson have won exactly one championship in football each, and records are not much different in their rivalry. So my question still stands. What then has Clemson being playing in that time?

As far as VT goes, they have clearly been playing superior football in the league, having won 4 championships since they joined in 2004. Kudos to them. But still it's far below FSU's 14 championships since 1992. But since FSU and VT have joined the league, Clemson has not been on the same level of either of them. As a VT fan you have something to boast about but Clemson's mediocrity is equally deserving of your criticism as is UVa.

As far as the dominance of VT over UVa in the last 15 years, it is quite strange indeed because UVa has several wins over FSU in that same time and is roughly even with Clemson, Miami and most everyone else in the league. So it is an anomaly in statistics that will change someday. It has come in the unique period of UVa going through a couple coaching changes after its hall of fame coach retired. Such changes hinder recruiting and talent levels. VT is likely to be going through this same kind of period when Beamer retires (even FSU struggled briefly in the transition from Bowdon). Regardless, hopefully a competitive rivalry can remerge as it used to be.

I really don't think that the folks at UVa think that the academics at Wake Forest are that inferior. No doubt about the attitude toward State and Clemson (VT too).
