We have had quite a few uniform threads. Since the topic came up again today I thought I would post another thread.

We were discussing the new NC State alternate helmets.

My nephew operates a facility that caters to youth sports - batting cages, pitching instruction, etc. He stated that it is all "the kids" talk about. The wilder the uniform, helmet, shoe, color or graphics, the more they like it.

I don't know if a kid would choose one school over another because of the uniform but they are talking about one instead of the other because of the uniform.
Define "working" because these two teams seem to have pretty traditional unis (at least by today's standards).

I think pro development, program prestige, location, facilities, and playing time are bigger factors. Uniforms seem to be exciting, but I doubt it is a major factor, unless the prospect is also pursuing a fashion degree.

It probably increases sales.
I say no...the same programs that are top 10 every year in recruiting remain the "traditional" schools with "boring" uniforms.

Tradition > gimmicks.
It easy for those who are already in the club to skip the more unconventional changes.

Those who are trying to break in are more willing to shake things up.

Agree with that.

I think a lot of schools though are having "traditional" home/aways and trying out a "custom" alternate look.

If did the "ghosted" wolf, I doubt I'd two tone it with carbon fiber on top.
The less successfull teams get a benefit.
We have silver and gold as colors and WKU, MSU and Rutgers have chrome. Baylor and Washington have used gold.

The Vandal mascot should be some Conan or Thor like character. The Vandals did destroy the city of Rome when the empire was strong.
I think it works. People are talking about teams they wouldn't normally talk about so it's good exposure. The two tone helmets like that NC State one look terrible though.

I'm not a history buff but I seriously doubt Idaho had anything to do with the fall of the Roman empire.

Check again. To this day, that's why Irish eat potatoes and Italians generally don't.

The Vandals need to metaphorically destroy Rome again.

In a way they are. Boise State is busting the BCS all the time and breaking down the big boys. Boise State is the Vandals and the BCS teams are Rome.

I agree. I like both the wolf and the black but in this case, more is less.

Maybe. But Notre Dame got a lot of attention for their new uniforms. It's hard to get more "in the club" than the Irish.

The only teams I see regularly trying wacky uniforms are Maryland, Notre Dame, and Oregon. Also in basketball there was Baylor, Lousiville, and Cincinnati's appalling color schemes for the NCAA tourney the last two years. I'm sure there's more out there, but they're not getting enough attention for me to notice.
In a few years it will play out and in 20 years someone will get great link bait doing a site that mocks the multi-uni looks of today just as they mock the softball uniforms that hit MLB.

I doubt most schools get enough increased sales or boost their talent level enough to make it pay but the cost of not following the trend is convincing your fan base you aren't trying or are too cheap to be successful so in that sense, it probably does pay.
Gimmick uniforms should share your school colors. Not sure where silver falls within these guidelines for NC State.

The Trojan and Spartan mascots are usually portrayed as a muscle bound bad ass. The German tribe Idaho has for a mascot should also. The Baylor gold helmet with a chrome I would look pretty sweet. Considering recruits like these uniform and branding options.
