Quote:This is the same type of field used by Jacksonville State University and Lincoln High School, and UAB will soon be installing two fields of this type, Hood said.

Will the 2 fields be side by side around the existing area?
I don't know. It's news to me because I thought we were only getting one.
My understanding was that the FieldTurf was going next to the football offices (outside the fence). There's enough room to put 2 fields there...though I don't think enough for either to be 100-yds long.

Is the track area/maybe former intramural area used for a practice field?

If so, then maybe the area inside the fence is one field and the area right in front of the football building / bordering University BLVD is the other field.
That would be my guess, unless they re-arrange things altogether.
1 is for the practice field and the other is for our new on campus stadium ( cough cough )
The area inside the running track will hold two football fields without complete endzones, due to the curvature of the track, and there would be light poles in the corners of the end zones. The area of the field inside the track is 375' x 375' with some area lost for the radius bend at each corner.
Yeah, but I heard the FieldTurf was NOT going inside the running track. Whether because it would take the track out of service for a period of time or because we just like to do things the hard way, that's the word I got.

All you guys must smoke more weed than me, cause your short term memory is crap. 05-stirthepot

Coach said the turf was going on the small practice field. Nothing was said about putting turf on the big practice field, yet. Speaking of which, has the digging crew arrived yet to begin the install?
I knew they were going w/ the turf on the "normal" practice field but thought that they may/were going to do the field inside the track as well as they do/did hold some practices/scrimmages there.

The article linked above hints otherwise. This could be new information.
Well at least we're staying on pace with the local high schools. 05-stirthepot 05-stirthepot 05-stirthepot 05-stirthepot 05-stirthepot
JSU doesn't have Field Turf. Not sure which brand it is but not FT.
I figure in this case "Field Turf" is just a generic term for rug.
Field Turf is the best by far.

To me, "Field Turf" indicates any of the brands that use modern, artificial turf technologies including drainage and the "foundation" materials that make the surface feel and react like real grass. If someone says "AstroTurf" then I assume they're talking about the cheap rug like Legion used to have and you can still get installed. Could be just my distinction.

I get that. I just think that Coach Hood was using it in the generic sense, as in "BandAid" for whatever adhesive bandage he had lying around.

You'd have to know what a swamp they were playing in previously.
My understanding is that the turf installation is going to be on the practice field outside of the track by the Ullman parking lot. The field inside the track will remain natural grass. I'm sure we will still want the option of practicing on natural grass sometimes.

I believe it may be possible to put two turf football fields side by side on the field by the Ullman parking lot. So, maybe that is the plan.
The small practice space between the parking lot and football building is not big enough for one football field, let alone two. The field space inside the track is larger than your typical track-ringed field... the track is a non-traditional square track with four straights... still not big enough for two fields, though.
