1970 is when we first had a Knight themed mascot. Although there have been a couple variations and name changes over the years. (Golden Knights)

I love the Citronaut. I hope ucf embraces it to make a comeback at least as a secondary mascot.

Don't be silly, it was a dragon. And the bird was Vincent Vulture, because... I have no idea.
The article introducing Vincent the Vulture hit the stands on Nov. 3, 1969. It pointed out to students the obvious - he carried the school's colors and, in answer to the school's motto, "Reach for the Stars," a bird was perfect. Also, where falcons, hawks, eagles, etc. were common among school mascots, a vulture would certainly be unique, thereby emphasizing the "focus on the individual" staple of FTU's philosophy. However, unlike the aforementioned birds of prey, Vincent did not hurt innocent little animals, he merely cleaned up after the vicious feedings of his cousin birds. Not only was he a pacifist, he helped fight pollution! The end of the article offered a spectacular visual description of training FTU's real-life Vincent to circle opposing football teams when they're in a huddle, or perching him on a dead tree branch at basketball games to stare at the other team. "Nothing," it pointed out, "stares like a vulture."However, even as Vincent fan clubs began to dot the FTU campus, creating what is to be remembered as "Vulture Mania," he was resolutely ignored by the SGA, and did not appear in the final list of mascots to be voted on, of which included the Knight of Pegasus, a scorpion, a fox, a black hawk, and a cheetah. The Future, as Vincent's primary supporter, lashed back, encouraging students to write in his name when they voted, reminding voters that the adversary, Pegasus, was created from the blood of a dead man in mythology.

Funny how things changed. Students hated the citronaut in the 60's.
vultures would be an awesome mascot, even better with the modern "evil/violent" style mascots over the cartoon style of the 60's and 70's

North Florida is in Jacksonville. There is no East Florida, because a huge majority of the state would be considered "East Florida." FAU is most likely the closest to an UEF that we have.

The Citronaut needs to come back as a secondary mascot. Would make for some great publicity! FIU should do the same with the Sunblazzer!

There is actually an Eastern Florida State College now. But their athletics is still at the community college level.

Holy crap, it's the Great Gazoo...sort of.
"Citronauts" was an awesome nickname and Fla. Tech had an awesome logo/mascot/whatever to go with it. Hopefully it will make a comeback someday.

Yeah, I wouldn't count them considering they're not governed by the Florida Board of Governors; the group that oversees all Florida public universities. Community and State colleges operate differently.

You are correct. After the state allowed community colleges to offer some 4 year degrees......there was a drive by these schools to market themselves as something other than community colleges. Valencia community college became Valencia college. Brevard community college became east florida state college. For all practical purposes.......they are still community colleges.
It's a way to one up similar community colleges, much like bow we all try to one up each other. Palm Beach and Pasco Hernando just changed from CC to SC. Miami Dade and Broward dropped community to just be Miami Dade College and Broward College, just like Valencia.

The arms race for community colleges is heating up....
