Inspired by something that was posted to the College Football subreddit,

Would you rather
  1. Have a player win the Heisman
  2. Win an FBS National Championship.
  3. Obtain membership in a P5 conference

EDIT - There is no glass ceiling.
EDIT2 - Regarding the National Championship --Assume that you could legitimately win the championship from the SBC (say- all conference champs go to the playoff and your team wins it all )

3 of course
1 and 2 are impossible without first getting 3.
2. Because if we win a NC as a Sun Belt Member, we will likely get offers from P5 Conferences proceeding that.

Agree, there's a glass ceiling in place that won't allow the first two to happen. Get me #3 and watch Texas State Grow

But assuming that you could legitimately win the championship from the SBC (say- all conference champs go to the playoff and your team wins it all ), would you still want to go to a P5 conference rather than stay in the SBC?
2. there a plenty of P5 schools that haven't won a national championship.
3 - without question for me

At that point, the conference wouldn't matter much to me as long as we had a legit chance to win a NC

my thoughts exactly. If we were winning a, or multiple NC's, then the revenue and prestige would be there, which is supposed to be the main reasons for playing in a P5 conference.

Of course, but they're in a better position to do so some day because they're in a P5 conference in the first place.

But imagine, if every school that was P5 was able to win at least one NC it would take a span of nearly 70 years to accomplish it. So a lot of schools will never win one.

?? so you would take putting yourself in a better position to win a national championship over actually winning a national championship??

hail southern

There are more G5 schools that haven't won a national championship than P5 schools that haven't (I'd wager).

In the currently landscape of college football, a G5 school winning it all CAN happen, but the system is built to make it EXTREMELY unlikely.

Given that, I'd rather move into P5. It creates more money, generates more exposure, and tips the bias in the new school's favor. That makes it much more likely to get not just a NC, but multiple National Championships.
I'd take a guaranteed P5 invite. Boise State spend a decade playing like a P5 school and never got an invite, so I'd be worried that a national championship would be viewed as a fluke. Idaho doesn't have the facilities to look attractive even with a NC on the table.
The only right answer is 3 if your eyes are on the big picture.

Getting into a P5 conference is worth exponentially more in the long run and benefits your entire athletic department.

One isolated national championship in football doesn't guarantee you much of anything beyond that one championship and you'd probably take home more money in your P5 conference tv money in just a few years than your one time pay out from the NC and you're making that tv money every single year and it is probably only going to go up over time. Your one NC probably costs you your head coach who presumably had a lot to do with it, five or ten years down the road you're probably only slightly better off than you are now.

You go from a perennial 1 bid MBB league to probably being guaranteed getting in to the big dance more often than not if you can simply reach 20 wins.

It's easy to get caught up in the fantasy of your team winning a national championship, but it's a shortsighted choice.
P5. No contest. 10-30 million a year in conference revenue, multitudinous advantages in every sport. The NC gets you 8-10 million in one year, and then what?
#2. I'd rather be a NC winner than a football program like kentucky or Washington st..In a p5 conference forever but always at the bottom.

NC is always the ultimate. I'd rather guarantee a nc and hope for a p5 invite than vice versa

exactly

Ask BYU about that.
Kill the Heisman, **** the NC, marry the P5.

That's how this works, right?
