Very good article comparing the two cities and what Jacksonville hopes to accomplish what Birmingham is doing with its downtown area.

I was in Jacksonville last weekend for the Rockville. Concert. Nice city with lots of road work going on around downtown. The cab driver told us it is the largest city area wise in the country. There are a lot of lofts and apartments planned in the heart of downtown there also.

He is probably correct. From the article:

City Land Area

Birmingham: 151.9 square miles
Jacksonville: 757.7 square miles

Jacksonville is 5 times the size of Birmingham land wise.
I recall that Jacksonville, FL has a unified city - county municipal setup similar to that in Mobile, AL so the area of the city may be the same as the area of the county in which it is located - plus whatever spillover it may have into an adjoining county like Hoover exists in both Jefferson and Shelby counties.

Mobile doesn't have a unified city-county government. However, most of the public schools, including those in the city of Mobile, are part of the Mobile County school system. The cities of Chickasaw, Saraland and Satsuma have their own school systems.
Most people don't know that Jacksonville is also the most populous city in Florida, thanks to that ginormous land mass.

No doubt about it. I think Dade County has a population of about 2.6 million, but Miami is only about 420,000, as it's only about 35 square miles. I like Jacksonville though. Coach Owens is from there, and we've gotten several players from that area recently.
