In football are there any guidelines as to scheduling for the 4 non-conference games? For example is there any requirement of only 1 FCS?

In basketball and baseball are there any scheduling rules? Any limits on non D1 games in either sport?

I believe only one non-FBS football and you cannot play a non-FBS on the road. When we moved up, we were not able to go to EKU to play. They could only come here.
That makes sense. It would make the conference look bad if its members were traveling to FCS teams to play. I guess there is no limit to "money games." Every school makes it own decisions I guess. I haven't looked at Sun Belt FB schedules over the past few years but I would assume almost everyone plays 1 "money game" at least, and probably many play 2 of them.

In basketball in my opinion there needs to be a rule against non D1 games. Ga. Southern played 4 last year and that is ridiculous. I am wondering with us joining the Belt this coming year in basketball if there is any limit on this.
Is the 1 non-FBS school even a rule? I know there's a rule about not playing away non-FBS schools.

I just figured every school recognized that since you can only count one non-FBS level win towards bowl eligibility, no one bothered to schedule a second.
I haven't heard of not scheduling FCS on the road. Is this new?
Not sure if it is a sunbelt rule, but only 1 non-fbs game can count towards bowl eligibility. Not playing non-fbs on road isn't new either. It's been around for a while now.
There are no actual guidelines. In 2007 the league proposed a set of guidelines requiring teams to schedule no more than 2 money games, and only one FCS game always at home. They also had to host 6 games a certain number of years. Those were passed, and then magically thrown away.
App plays 2 FCS next year. Ga State played 3 FCS last year. Although they are/were transitioning.

My rules would be as follows:

1) No more than 1 FCS per year.
2) No FCS road games
3) You must have 6 home games (which means you have to have at least 1 OOC FBS team).
4) Home games only count towards the 6 game requirement if they are in your stadium, or in a stadium closer to your campus than your opponents and is within 200 miles of your campus, or you have public approval from the Conference.

Teams not complying with this rule shall forfeit 50% of their FBS Bowl payout share for that year.

It will never happen. The only conference that I know of that rigorously enforces its OOC scheduling goals is the Atlantic 10 (basketball). Schedule crap there and they'll yank your funding. And one team was told that if they do that again, and they'll be a vote on expulsion.

For App this is the only year we will schedule 2 FCS teams. Our AD has said repeatedly that our scheduling plan for 2015 and beyond is 1 P5 on the road, 1 G5 at home, 1 G5 on the road, and an FCS at home. The only change would be if we got a P5 at home.
As noted the league adopted a set of guidelines put forward by the Wyatt Committee. Since all the other standards adopted have been ignored feel free to play five home games and travel to an FCS if that suits you.
So standards were adopted and passed by the schools then schools ignored them? Does that make any sense?

Its worth noting there are a lot of new faces. MTSU was the big champion behind those standards if I remember correctly.

The problem has always been that we have schools who for reasons unknown are just unable to follow those standards. Rather than pulling a Denver or ULM and forcing these schools to comply or get out, we've let it go, so now no one follows them.

Technically ULM is in violation of the football scheduling rule. Its supposed to be 11 home games in a two year period, and the Warhawks will play their second consecutive year with only 5 home games, and also have three money games this year.

Thing is...The rest of us violate the basketball scheduling rules daily...so its hard to throw stones at ULM, unless you are a Cajun fan, and you throw stones at them anyway.

Hoops rules were formally modified multiple times so every one is apparently in compliance.

But never have found if they bothered to repeal the 15 conference sport rule that would have forced Denver and UNO out and obviously 3/4ths of the members or more elected to ignore the idea of not adding anyone without football.
I would hope the Sun Belt certainly can get to the point that no one plays more than 2 money games. I know Ga. Southern is playing 3 this year but we aren't bowl eligible until 2015 so I guess the reasoning was take the money to help pay for all the stadium improvements. I do believe going forward 2015 on we will not play more than 2-- our AD has bascially said the we plan to play no more than 2 money games starting in 2015.

Scheduling in basketball is a problem. Getting home games is hard for many of our schools. That is why I really like playing a complete double round robin. With 11 schools that is 20 games. Playing 22 conference games probably is a bit of a stretch when we get to 12 teams, but I would hope we would keep a 20 game conference schedule.
Here's how I would approach scheduling in basketball.

Form an alliance with other conferences. Adding NMSU would help for basketball.

Other conferences with 12 teams. Southern, MAC, OVC, AAC. We aren't the only conference with this problem.

Try to get each conference to commit to one game per team per year cross conference. Take the average final RPI from a rolling 2 year period over for a period at some point in the past to figure out who goes where. Teams can trade if they want to.

But in this way, you'd get 20 games squared away from the start (I'm assuming a 16 game league tilt). At that point, you've only got to fill 10 games per year. Here's the rules of the remaining games. Only 1 non D1 team, which must be at home.

If I'm USA, I'd remember that you could start a tournament as well (2 game tournaments work too). That gets you to 23. That only leaves 4-7 games to schedule. And with 3 home games already set with your tournament and your non-D1, it gives maximum flexibility. I then have our annual tilt with USM, I'd go play 2 high end teams on the road if I had to (heck, 2 for 1 works by that point). I'd then have 3-5 games that I'd have to worry about. And I'd already have a couple of chances to get a signature win, plenty of home games, and a some likely games against prominent mid-majors.
AState is looking at the possibility of hosting an exempt event at the Mexico campus in the future. Hopefully that will help us get some decent games.
i am hoping we get more quality home games this coming year. Having 20 conference games helps. I will be the first to admit our basketball facility is old and probably one of the worst 3-4 in the Sun Belt. We apparently have big trouble getting any decent D1 school to come here and that is why we play non-D1 games. Last year we had 4 which is way too many.

A scheduling arrangement with some other league would definitely help.

It is clear here at Ga. Southern football is #1 and I would put baseball as #2. We have a long way to go in basketball.

Yea, lets work with the other conferences.

16 Conference Games (8 home, 8 road)
1 Non D1 team (1 home)
4 Alliance Games versus other 12 team conferences (2 home, 2 road)
One tournament (start one if you don't have one yet - pack it with Presbyterian and St Francis if you have to 2-games at home)
2 games against your nearest rivals not already scheduled (1 home, 1 road)
3 High profile teams (schedule them 2 for 1 if you have to - 1 home 2 road)
2-4 teams at your discretion. Not that hard.

Another thing is that for a tournament you can also work with your big name state schools too. Or schedule a doubleheader. For example, USA every couple of years will host a double header with Alabama and Auburn. USA will play of them and the SEC team not playing USA will play someone else in USA's arena. Get creative. But hosting a tournament kind of means that you have to have an arena fit to host a tournament.

------------------------

For USA, this is what the schedule could look like.

We'd get ****** alliance games because we stunk last year. So OOC might look like this: Bowling Green (H - Alliance), Tulane (H - Alliance), Jacksonville State (A - Alliance), Samford (A-Alliance), USM (H-Longstanding Rival), UAB (A-Longstanding Rival), Spring Hill College (H - non D1), Jacksonville (H - Open), Florida State (A - Prominent 2 for 1), Texas (A - Prominent 2 for 1), Georgia (H - Prominent 2 for 1), 2 H for tournament (could be crummy teams, might get Alabama or Auburn).

Thats a 30 game schedule with plenty of home interest, opportunties to upset teams if were in a reach year, etc.

Instead we get a crap sandwich of a schedule.
