With the talk of various 12th member candidates, it might be a good time to revisit this conversation. I came across a study today by the National Association of College & University Business Officers. There were 849 US & Canadian respondents to the study which was looking at rates of endowment growth for 2013. I scanned it for existing Sun Belt schools and I have listed schools of interest (recently left the conference or been discussed on this board.) Liberty was not listed, so I could not confirm the $1 Billion number which has been thrown around.

Liberty had an endowment of less than 5 million in 2000. Currently it is in the 55-60 million range. Late start, but it is growing. The school has over 2 billion in assets. Approximately 1 billion is in fixed assets and 1 billion is in liquid or semi-liquid assets.
Since much of endowment funds are designated for specific purposes, the bulk of those funds (and potentially none of those funds) are available for athletics.

At our level it means little because we're are not a conference of like minded academic institutions with research cooperation etc. But once you get to the power 5 those numbers along with research dollars matter.

I think the last UL Foundation report (last summer) had us at over $160M. I'll be curious about the new numbers for 2014.

true- we are only looking for any school that is willing to field a football team. overall quality and standing of the university seems to be not so important...

Former AState coach John Bobo told me of a recruit who visited and he asked him what it would take for him to come to AState. The kid gave a dollar figure, and Bobo told him, "I've got assistants who don't make that much."
He signed with Mississippi State but I'm sure it was solely for the value of the scholarship.
Not a source of pride for GS, but we have only been a university since the 90's. Most of our old alumni are pre university status retired schools teachers to this point. The College of Business passed the College of Education a while back so things should get better in the endowment area like with most things in the near future.

Adding UMass and the Amherst campus was around 230 Mill.
We have 5 campuses with Amherst being the flagship.
UMass - Lowell just moved their basketball to Div 1 and were grandfathered for Hockey.
UMass - Worcester Medical school has the largest endowment followed by Amherst, the rest are small.
UMass - Dartmouth and recently took over a law school.
UMass - Boston the smallest, but has the JFK Library and is on the Bay.

that's where the everyman schools are at a disadvantage. the privates have always had wealthy students who become the movers and shakers and bid donors later on. the everyman schools have the programs like engineering and computer science and education that lead to good careers but fewer of those grads make it to the big money and donate millions back to dear old U.

Exactly!!!! That's why I never understand people bringing up this argument. Now if you can get your hands on annual donations, pledges, and planned giving for athletics for all Sun Belt teams you would have a good discussion point.

True, but GS is still growing and improving at a rapid pace. In just the last five years we added 4000+/- students with plans to add another 5000 more in the short term,expanded the masters programs, added degree programs, two new colleges (engineering and technology), and are continuing to add doctoral programs despite the board of regents being dead set against adding another doctoral university in the state even though the population has exploded the the two decades. Honestly twenty years ago people would have died with laughter if you would have asserted where GS is today much less having the third highest SAT scores among the large universities in the state. To put it in perspective in 1960 when we became a Georgia Southern College the enrollment was around 1100, when we started football in the 80's it was still a small local college with about 6500 hundred students, in 1990 when we became a university there was only 11000 students, today we are classified nationally as a Carnegie Doctoral Research institution with 20500 students. I'm just guessing but I doubt you needed much more than a high school degree to get in GSC back in the 80's much less have a min of a 1010 SAT just to meet minimum application requirements today. I know half or more of my friends would not have been accepted today. Our living alumni population, currently only at 75K+/- which is about half of a typical old school university of our size, will grow faster than it ever has and the majority of them will not be unfairly low paid teachers. This bodes well for the endowment and booster numbers.
