With the new hire of Mike Rhoades as Head Men's Basketball Coach, I couldn't help noticing that he coached for a while at the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon.

There are some other Yellow jackets down south I wish Rice would seriously try to schedule contests with in Basketball and Football.

What interesting teams would you like to see Rice play that are different from the usual suspects the last 20-30 years?

My list has a definite southern "flavor" with an exception at the end:

GA Tech (Atlanta, GA): we have over 450 Rice alumns in the Atlanta metro area, and more in the neighboring states that are starved to see our boys play. I'm sure they're as tired of driving to Birmingham as I am. They're always decent in hoops and Paul Johnson runs the 'bone so all you Hatfield fans can reminisce. What say, Coaches Bailiff, Rhoades and AD Karlgaard--any chance of heading to Atlanta sometime soon?

UGA (Athens, GA):

They've played quite a few CUSA schools in Football recently, and were even beaten by UCF in a recent Liberty Bowl game. And they're pretty good in men's hoops as well, so helps the RPI.

Georgia State (Atlanta, GA): easy win in football (should be) and a good challenge while building up in men's hoops.

Mercer (Macon, GA): They just beat a little team in the NCAAs you might have heard of called Duke. Good hoops program.

Kennesaw State Owls: (Kennesaw, GA) will also have football in 2015. Owls vs.Owls vs.Owls vs. Owls (get FAU & Temple involved as well) for the Annual "Owl-over the USA Trophy" or the "Owl-ed Forces Trophy" This would really be a fun way to help with marketing our brand identity nationwide. (Actually, that may be a great thing for Karlgaard and Rhoades to actually pursue!)

Cal-Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz, CA): betcha weren't expecting a Cali school on my list, but they just have the best mascot of anyone and I'd love to get the shirt: Goooooo Fightin' Banana Slugs! 02-13-banana

Good list. I especially like LSU, AtM and Baylor. I think the Ags and Tigres are potential Rice advocates. Won't go further on why in this venue. At the intersection, I'm the guy with the sign that reads WILL ELABORATE IN PERSON FOR PRICEY SINGLE MALT SCOTCH OR SMALL BATCH BOURBON--PERFERABLY BLANTONS.

Also, I agree with a Georgia Tech game.

My thoughts:
Army (we play them this year-- good-- and this is a game where we're very competitive, if not favored. National exposure.)

Air Force (another national exposure team -- our Armed Forces bowl victory creates buzz. Also another game where we're very competitive.)

Vanderbilt (numerous reasons -- but an SEC team)

Stanford (same numerous reasons as Vandy, more buzz, given our new AD)

Duke (see Vandy, Standford minus AD buzz hey, North Carolina's a good road trip)

Oregon State (please, no guffaws or unseemly noises. PAC-12, late night TV coverage and Corvallis ain't bad at all. Great wine country.)
Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, Houston, TCU, SMU, Arkansas.
Like to Georgia theme post. definitely love the Ga Tech idea.

I wonder if athletics coordinates with development on scheduling. Hope they would.

Basketball has a lot more games, and I'd like to see some road games that make money and get the alumni dialed in.

Besides Ga Tech, I'd love to see the following

1. Northwestern
2. Georgetown or Maryland
3. St. Johns or Fordham
4. UCLA
5. Cal and Stanford

In football, we want an SEC road game every year to make some money and test ourselves.

For that second OOC road game, I think Ga Tech sounds great. also Stanford, an Academy, Notre Dame,
Would like to see Rice schedule Duke and Vandy. Basketball vs. Duke would be tough, but the way to improve is to play one of the best.

"Fiat Slug" is not an embarrassing error like "Mors de super", but it seems like odd phrasing.

"Fiat Lux" is the official motto of all of the schools in the UC System, and it is obviously a play on that. Though, conceded, it is still odd.

That said, there is perhaps no Latin error as embarrassing as "mors de super."

With that background, I now think it's pretty cool: the spoof of the System motto more than makes up for the resulting inelegance of the Latin.

The irony of GoodOwl wearing a UC Santa Cruz shirt would be off the charts.

Touché. I guess I'd look like this:

Wear it with pride Mutha******! 02-13-banana
I would want the Rice basketball program to begin to court "event" type of games with the teams that are now considered innovators in branding college basketball nationwide and internationally, such as Duke, Texas and Michigan State. ESPN is working closely with these schools in innovative ways (aircraft carrier game, US Military base Germany and the 3-city showcase for next year...NYC, Chicago, LA). If Rice wants to establish a strong brand in hoops, then it needs to be seen as an innovative leader. MSU AD Mark Hollis is leading the nation by creating these innovative sports events, Mike White is doing the same at Duke and Patterson is now moving UT in the same direction. I would encourage neutral site games as well as invite these major programs to Tudor/Autry, even if it is a 2 for 1 deal.

On a regular basis I think that games versus Northwestern and/or Purdue (alternating different years) from the Big 10 Vandy from the SEC and Stanford from the Pac 12 is a great idea. An annual home game versus a member of the armed forces (rotating each year) in basketball would also be nice. The school could market this game to current and former service members in the Texas Gulf Coast region.
You picked our worst 'logo' possible.
I would figure out where we either currently recruit and want to do better or would like to establish a beach-head for recruiting, and play basketball and football there (if we can find a foe of comparable strength). It was raised above, but the Atlanta area has boat-loads of kids that could benefit from a Rice education, that might have a talent level a tad below SEC or ACC competition (or know they could play for Rice, rather than be practice fodder at UGA or, to a lesser extent, Georgia Tech).
Hatfield certainly got a few kids out of Atlanta. Fred got some out of Florida. I think our best bet is to hitch our wagon to the SEC for at least a couple of football games and a few basketball games every year. I don't think we'll ever go to the SEC--that ship has sailed, and with aTm they no longer have any need for us. But it's our best way to get some visibility--all their games are on TV--and to make some money, both of which are essential ingredients to moving up anywhere.
LSU, Oklahoma @ Rice Stadium
Given that I live in northern Virginia, I would love to see them play Navy on a regular basis in Football and/or basketball. I would love to see a Rice-Virginia baseball series (I traveled to ECU the last time the owls were there). I think GA Tech makes a lot of sense as well; Atlanta is fertile recruiting ground for a lot of schools. If they want a beatable Big10 team they should try to schedule Maryland...

No big games will be possible at Rice until HRS is upgraded to major league status. Then you'll have a world class parking fiasco if big crowds show up.

Makes me wonder how much Rice gets from Lone Star for the games sold to Reliant.
