A Crosstown TV shootout
UC-Xavier game set for ESPNU, but few viewers have access

BY BILL KOCH | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

A ticket to the Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout, always a prized possession in Cincinnati, may be even more valuable this year.

The annual college basketball showdown between the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University, scheduled for Dec. 13 at UC's Fifth Third Arena, has been televised on either ESPN or ESPN2 since the 1998-99 season.

But this year the game will be available only on ESPNU, a cable channel devoted to college sports which most Greater Cincinnati households can't access.

Time Warner, the largest cable system in Southwest Ohio, does not carry the channel, which was launched in March 2005.

In Northern Kentucky, customers of Insight Communications can get ESPNU as part of its digital service.

And in Lebanon, Ohio, Lebanon Communications also offers ESPNU as part of its digital service.

Everyone else will need access to a satellite hookup - and a higher-tier programming package - to see the game.

John Long, general manager at WXIX-TV (Channel 19), which owns the local television rights to UC's basketball games, said Wednesday that ESPN has shifted the game to ESPNU in an attempt to force Time Warner Cable to include ESPNU in its basic cable package.

"It's all about ESPN and power plays and trying to get as many UC games on ESPNU so it will force the cable systems to put ESPNU on their cable system," Long said. "That's what this is all about."

According to Long, ESPN officials are counting on UC and Xavier fans contacting Time Warner to protest the absence of ESPNU on its basic system.

But Tilea Coleman, from ESPN Communications, said that's not the case.

"Absolutely not," Coleman said. "The point of ESPNU is to be a 24-hour cable service devoted to college sports. We are within our rights to televise this game. The intent of ESPNU is to enable fans to see match-ups such as this."

Coleman said that ESPN remains in discussions with Time Warner.

"We haven't reached an agreement," she said. "But we're hopeful."

ESPN's contract with the Big East Conference gives the sports channel the right to pick any 12 conference games or nonconference home games from UC's schedule. At this point, Coleman said, there are no plans to allow a local affiliate to pick up the ESPNU telecast.

"That's something that we'll have to discuss with our programming department," she said. "We still haven't finalized our entire schedule."

But Channel 19's Long said it's unlikely that ESPN would allow the game to be shown anywhere except on ESPNU.

"They're not going to let you do that," Long said. "They want everybody realizing the only way I'm going to be able to see this thing is if one of the cable guys picks it up.

"I kept telling the guys at ESPN that you're insulting people's intelligence. You think a cable operation is going to succumb to pressure because of one night? It isn't going to happen."

Karen Baxter, director of public affairs for Time Warner Cable, said Time Warner "would love to carry ESPNU" on its sports tier, a package available for an additional $2.95 per month.

"ESPN insists on (ESPNU) being carried on our standard lineup, which means all of our customers would have to pay for it," Baxter said. "That would impact the price everyone pays for cable. We don't think it's fair to pass that price along to all of our customers."

Baxter said the price a cable system must pay for the programming of a provider such as ESPNU is based on how many customers would receive the channel. She said Time Warner has 640,000 customers in Southwest Ohio, which includes Cincinnati and Dayton.

This is not the only UC game that local fans will have trouble seeing. UC athletic director Mike Thomas said that seven other games have been placed on ESPNU and that the Bearcats are not scheduled to make any appearances on the Big East's Big Monday package with ESPN.

Thomas, who said he voiced his displeasure with the Big East office about the television schedule, said he knows that UC fans won't like the Crosstown Shootout television arrangement, but the school is virtually helpless to do anything about it except to join forces with Xavier, Miami and Dayton to lobby Time Warner to reach an agreement with ESPN.

Thomas said he expects that UC fans will have "the reaction that the ESPN folks want them to have."

"They're trying to select games in certain markets where there's real interest," Thomas said, "so that local fans will voice their displeasure and ESPNU will be added to their local (cable) system."

Said Mike Waddell, UC's senior associate athletic director: "We've lobbied as much as we can lobby. It comes down to the bottom line is that ESPN is in a battle with Time Warner. We're held over a barrel here and WXIX is held over a barrel."

What a crock! 03-weeping 03-hissyfit
Well I can get ESPNU so I'm covered there but if ESPN doesn't sell WXIX channel 19 the games they don't have on ESPNU we will all be in the dark. This all comes about when UC is in a down year so the pressure to get UC on TV isn't going to be as great as normal. Doesn't look like Time Warner is going to add ESPNU so Time Warner customers are out. Between Zimpher, Big East, and ESPN, UC just got set back 20 years as far as TV goes. Back to the radio! Been there, done that. Don
hopefully ESPNU will get into Time Warner cable now - 19 news this morning mentioned it won't be on TV in the area.

this sux.

is it possible we will have more football games on tv than basketball?
Leave Time Warner... they suck anyways. I kicked Time Warner out of my house in June and I've never been happier with my TV provider choice (Dish).
Did the article mean that you can now get ESPNU for an extra 2.95 a month?

No. It said that Time Warner wants to add ESPNU to that package, but ESPN won't let them add it to that package.

Who would have EVER thought such a thing would be possible..?!?! 04-jawdrop
It's not possible. WXIX might not have the Xavier game but they will telecast a large number of UC games this year.
wxix can't show any games that espn won't let them show. this is hardly a surprise. espn has done this before and will continue to do it. they suck like that. last year marquette vs notre dame, michigan vs michigan state, and the first oklahoma vs oklahoma state games were put on espnu and unavailable to anyone else in the local area without a dish. they simply would not let a local network even simulcast it. they want people to do what they're doing here in cincinnati now, complain to the cable provider and pursuade them to pick it up.

in my opinion, the big east screwed up when they did not insist that all games should be made available in local markets. espn could put the game on espnu if they want to, but everyone in the cincinnati area must be able to view the game. if espn refused, then the big east could have gone to another network such as fox sports. that seems to be working out great for the pac ten.

i hate espn. in saying that, i don't hate them enough to not subscribe to their programming. i have directv and max out the sports tier. i also recommend it over cable. it has all the same stations that cable has and it's cheaper. it also has more features and options when it comes to sports programming. You bring up fooball vs. basketball games on local TV. How about KSU basketball vs. UC basketball games on local TV? That would be crazy to have a team, what, 500 miles away have more games on local TV than a team in our own city.

Espn 2 has got the KS, XU game but ESPN doesn't have the UC, XU game. Now I know you know why but I'm going to say it anyway. KS has got the gold mine and UC has got the shaft. Don

For the 47th time, guys. Drop kick Time-Warner's lame ass service and product to the curb, save a few bucks, get better service, more options, ESPN-U for free and watch what you want. Plus if you press the issue you get a free DVR so you never, ever miss a game. Pick a satellite provider, doesn't really matter which one. Just get away from TW telling you what you can watch.

Why do you think they try to cut you a deal when you say you are leaving? They even know they suck and are overpriced.

Until satellite figures out how to keep a signal in a storm (ya know, when you really WANT to watch TV) cable will get the nod from me. ESPN is like a freakin' crack dealer. They give you the product for free for so many years, then they add a new channel to the lineup and psuh the programming you want over there so you must pony up the dough for the new service. Thanks, but no thanks. ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNNews, ESPN Classic, ESPNU....enough is enough! Meanwhile, over on ESPN2 they'll be showing replays of the World's Strongest Man competition.

We've gotten drilled with storms in Anderson Township this month and not a single problem. In over 2 years we have lost signal one time and it lasted for about 5 minutes. I had more downtime with cable than that. I think that is sales pitch 101 from the cable pimps. I'm telling ya, its like going from a VW Beetle to an Audi TT and saving money while doing it. Kinda the same size and both come from about the same place, but once you get in, there is no freaking comparison.
I received a reply back from the general manager of WXIX yesterday about my inquiry of how many UC games would be on channel 19 this season.
He says of of now they would show 11-14 games. They are still working with UC on the schedule and that might increase but ESPN is not making it easy on them.
Rath,

If they ever make it possible for me to purchase local Cincinnati stations here in Columbus I would probably be on board. It would be great to be able to get Channel 19 up here, I just don't know if the FCC would allow it.

People who live in Columbus can get channel 19 if they own their home. Put up a tower with an over the air antenna, plus booster and you've got it. I get Columbus stations and I live on the other side of Cincinnati away from you. I put up my own outfit but the tower,200 mile antenna, roter, booster and some other gadgets came to less than 500 dollars out of pocket. Don
