Dick Vitale didn't do anything, really. This is all very overrated.
Vitale basically said that he had asked Virginia's Tony Bennett if he had ever met THE Tony Bennett, the famous crooner. Apparently the Wahoos coach laughed and told him that he had and added that the signer wasn't the only other person he had met who shared his full name. Apparently the young basketball coach had also once met a stripper named Toni Bennett but she obviously spelled her first name differently.
It was a weird story to share in that context to be sure and I have no idea why Bennett told Vitale that story in the first place or why Vitale would feel compelled to repeat it on national television? When Vitale finished, Reese Davis kind of froze for a second looking at the older commentator like, :What the hell are you doing, Dick? Please stop right now before this reaches the point of no return." Vitale then did end his weird little story before Davis gracefully played it off.
It was certainly odd but ultimately harmless. Unless Bennett tries to get a job coaching the Vatican's team, this isn't going to impact him in any way.

That's disappointing. I'm all for adopting a law abridging Duke Vitale's free speech.
