I know we never have gone to the CBI or CIT ournaments in men's bball. I also realize we have a decorated history and some will look down on those tournaments. My question is if you guys would support us going if we don't make a run in CUSA tourney that gets us in NIT or auto bid. I would support it because we have a young head coach and a team with three true freshmen playing. A chance for them to get more practice and game action. Would also be good for a guy like CJ Washington to make up for some of the games he missed. Just my thoughts, was wondering yours.
I will support the team in whatever tournament they play in. But I don't support those tournaments. I do not want them to accept anything below an NIT bid, because the CIT and CBI is what is wrong with college basketball. However it really doesn't matter what we think. They will do it or not without regard to fans.

I am also fundamentally against those tournaments from a purist standpoint. Those touna, nets play best of whatever games, so the teams end up playing more games. so it really skews the record books, and is unfair to those record holders who broke records in a standard basketball schedule.

I suspect they wouldn't accept a bid, since those tournaments require you to pay to enter.

I totally respect your view and would feel exactly the same most years. I just meant this year because of the younger players and coach. Considering they paid for the women to go to the WBI, I believe it's possible they might let us go.
We can't get an auto bid to the NIT, and I seriously doubt they'd take us as an "at large" to the nit.

I'm not sure what caliber of teams they have invited to the lower tourneys in the past or if we've even done enough to warrant an invite,
But I'd be for it for the reasons stc mentioned
Whatever Mackin & Haase wish to do will be fine with me, but unless we make it to the big dance my "give a crap" isn't really there.
One thing I wouldn't do is brag about going to it like ECU fans do.

It is a shame tournament. Something you might do, but you don't brag about it. Like bragging about taking the last girl left at the bar home.
At least with the NIT you have a little bit of mojo if you feel like you got snubbed.

Better to get some rather than be stuck with blue balls til the next night, or season, in this case?
I have no problems with thoes tourneys and respectfully disgree with MB on that stance. Each to his own. I will watch thoes games if they are on tv.

That said I will support the Our guys wherever we play but unless we make a deep run we won't be invited to either one. I could be wrong.

Auto bid would mean we won the CUSA tourney and got in dance. Only way I see an NIT possibility is if we made CUSA title game and had strong showing. We would have 21 wins and they sometimes reward teams that have strong showings in conference tournaments. I also agree with MB that its not a tournament to brag about, maybe just gain post season experience and practice time.
My opinion is that if UAB should be invited to ANY post season tournament, they should go and give it their best shot. If given a home game, I will buy tickets even if I can't go (My grandson can use them for his Big Brother/Big Sister groups)

In 2003, we had no shot at any postseason, but played our way to an NIT tournament by playing our way to the finals. However, that involved beating Dwayne Wade and #8 Marquette and almost beating Louisville in the finals on their home court...something present day CUSA doesn't give us an opportunity to do.
i pretty much agree with everything MB has said in this thread. if our boys play in one of those tournaments, i'll definitely support them. but…what he said
No strong opinion either way. If it helps us get our 20th win of the season, eh, why not? OTOH, there's the risk of an embarrassing loss to Southwestern Idaho Tech.
With these tournaments, go on a run and you can have a 30 or 40 win season.
We might as well get used to the CBI . If we don't win the tourney or the regular season title, then those post season tourneys will be our only option. Little conferences will all be edged out.
Would not got to a CIT or CBI game, no thanks.

Better than losing to South Hapsberg Institute of Technology .

Your right. But 21 wins with two over Southern Miss and the UNC win are not terrible. Not to mention that the NIT has a long history with us. I suspect three CUSA teams to be in it. It's a long shot for us but I've seen stranger things.
Yeah I would have a problem with UAB accepting an invite to the CBI, CIT, CBA, ABC, MIT, or any other tournament not the NCAA or NIT. UAB Basketball is bigger than those low rung pay for play tournaments. It would be a complete embarrassment if UAB played in the CBI or CIT. It would be the equilvalent of paying a hooker for sex.
