They have been trying for years and really upset current Sunbelt members that they are trying so hard to g et out. New Sunbelt members seem to "move up" to CUSA and they are left behind. Why? Academics? Athletic budget? Minuscule TV market area? Trying to call themselves a name other than their own.UL-L? All of the above?
they are in the bottom tier among FBS schools for both endowment & academic rankings

they come from a state that hasn't been fully invested in them the past few years

they only have a 16k enrollment which is below average for both the mac & cusa
This guy again? Good lord I've never seen a troll more obsesed with the Ragin' Cajuns more than this tool. Savacool is such a douche.
Savacool, How does it feel to be a fan of a school that was so dumb that they left the SEC.

What else is a Tulane fan going to do? Everyone had to leave CUSA for them to have a decent year and they still couldn't beat the Cajuns.
Cannot/can't

Georgia Tech?

GT kept their athletics up, Tulane just quit. Tulane and Rice should go to FCS with their peer schools

Georgia Tech was blessed by fortunate geography to be close-enough to the ACC footprint. Not so Tulane.

Also -- near-impossible to believe as it is now -- Atlanta and New Orleans had comparable populations and economic activity for most of the 1900-1980 era. Then the two cities moved in dramatically opposite directions. (Someone could write a good book on the subject.) Tulane was affected by that.

Can't speak for Rice, but Tulane would simply discontinue its football program rather than go FCS. We could not survive that.

Houston and Atlanta stole New Orleans thunder, they replaced her as the business and economic hub in the south, not much business wise in Olreans except tourism and the shipping port for economic activity.

If being in a conference with peer schools is what mattered, they'd have to drop down to D3 and join the UAA.

Houston and Atlanta played their cards with great skill. But the municipal leadership in New Orleans (combined, of course, with the statewide leadership in Baton Rouge) was almost aggressively "hyper-stupid" in stomping New Orleans' market-advantages into the mud.

To be sure: that's still a lot of economic activity. And there was a time when those factors were even bigger than they are now.

It took Katrina to finally end the sleazy, pay-to-play mentality in New Orleans and Baton Rouge. (Well, maybe "end" it is too strong, but at least diminished it to a level that is comparable to other areas). Heart-breaking that it took a crisis of that magnitude, but it did.

Other than the Ivy League, there are no peers in FCS. There are a number in Division III. And then there are Stanford, Northwestern, Vanderbilt and Duke who had the fortune that they stayed in their conference and it stayed together.

Some of the ivies, most of the patriot league, and a few one-offs like William & Mary in the CAA or a UC Davis in Big Sky
