Full Version: What does it mean to be a preferred walk-on? Coaches explain

What I got out of that is that the social reward (BMOC) for being identified on campus as a football team member (few of the girls know the status of individual players unless they are written up in papers) is the main appeal of this system.

Even when there were almost unlimited scholarships back in the 1960s, there were "walk ons" who wanted to be known as football players to the students on campus. The same differentiation is found in the NFL between "invited free agents" and those who just show up at training camp.
It usually means that the player has been told he will be put on scholarship the following calendar year.
So, picking up chicks is just a happy side-effect.
Happy ending.

Picking up chicks and finding many of them more than willing is indeed a happy side effect of being a FB player at Bama. One RB on a Bama team in 1962 had the reputation of asking his "date" if she was ready to "put out". If her answer was negative, he walked away and asked another prospect.

My nephew was a pre-med student on a swimming scholarship and lived in Bryant Hall. He complained to his dad that when he got back to the dorm after morning workout laps and class / lab sessions, he had a hard time finding an unoccupied room to catch some ZZZZs. The compliant females were not all students but also "town girls" and "20 something" grown women who liked athletes.
Just an FYI, not even Alabama is Alabama of the 1960s. If guys are joining the football team to get laid, then I just don't know anymore.

As Smaug noted and I supported with actual experiences, willing females are just a "happy side-effect" of being an athlete at a major school where you are among the "Biggest MOC". If you think the present day athlete is any less attractive to these females (of various ages), then "you just don't know anymore".

It begins with the girls in high school and continues on into college and beyond (if the athlete's career goes farther). Like with "rock stars", pro teams (and I suspect major colleges as well) have their "groupies" who make their livings off providing "essential services".

With the rise of prominent female athletes in recent times, it is possible (probable) that there are males who are there to keep these athletes "happy side-effect wise" as well.
Um... Even college students who are not athletes or BMOC can get laid now.
I think BAMANBLAZERFAN thinks college today is an 80's movie.
Porky's.
Back to School.

Rodney Dangerfield as Thornton Mellon, (to smokin' hot coed in hot tub), "Hi, there. What's your major?"

Smokin' hot coed, "English Lit."

Mellon, "Really? How about helping me straighten out my Longfellow."

Ba dum tish.
A preferred walk-on is someone who is told they will have a spot on the 105 man roster...

That's right -- all the males are Boy Scouts and all the females are virgins -- at least in today's campus scene. LOL, with a grin!

Actually, I would think they are pretty much like they were in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and today. No more generally moral or immoral than in the past.

The virtuousness of college students of the past 50 years aside, college today is nothing like it was in the 60s, 70s, 80s, or even the 90s. Hell, it's different today than when I went to college in 2001-08. I'm sure the headline names on a football team at a place like Alabama get some star treatment, but being a walk-on on the football team doesn't mean you have women hanging off of you like it's The Revenge of the Nerds.
That, and fewer young women are in college pursuing their MRS than then.
I had not clicked on the thread because the title did not interest me who knew BamanBlazerfan would be discussing sex in college thru the years.
