I know the Shoe was just built a decade ago.. but I hope that when it's time has come we can work out a deal similar to the new one the Cardinals got for their new arena..

say bye to Freedom Hall as we know it..
If we build a new arena, I hope it would either be on or adjacent to campus. I remember being bused as a student to Riverfront Colliseum in the 70s to watch the Bearcats play. It just isn't the same as having an arena close to campus.

When Rick's basketball team got kicked out of Freedom Hall so they could fill it with dirt and have a tractor pull that was the begining of the end for UL basketball in Freedom Hall. What Rick wants Rick gets in that town. I think it was a whole month he had to give up Freedom Hall during basketball season and he wasn't a bit happy. He now has it taken care of. Don
Building an arena away from campus would all by destroy student attendance. Most kids don't bring cars with them and would have no way to get to the games. Any new arena would have to be on campus, or just across the street.

UofL has a mini-campus area around the arena site and is expanding it in anticipation of the new arena. UK and UofL will both have downtown arenas now with capacities in upwards of 20,000- which are/will be filled for most every home game. If that isn't a testament to college basketball in the state of Kentucky I don't know what is.

I hear what you're saying for UC though. Location wise this is nothing new for Louisville Basketball.

Not a slam but also a testament to not having professional sports franchises in Louisville or Lexington (excluding the Riverbats)
Playing off campus in Cincinnati is the kiss of death.

If we don't play on campus, it's not college sports.

Since Louiseville does not have pro sports, it's a whole
different ball game.

I think its even more of a testament to college athletics in Kentucky. Louisville has never been NBA friendly and significant elements of the community have kept the NBA out. KFC's 'Bucket' proposal is a prime example. YUM was prepared to foot most of the bill to build an NBA ready arena but UofL deep sixed the deal by refusing to play in the same building with an NBA franchise. There was no mass outcry from Louisvillians slamming UofL for its objections, after all we are college fans by and large and the NBA flirtations passed quickly away. Now a few short years later UofL is getting its 450 million dollar arena and the NBA is nowhere to be found.

Kentucky is a one horse state.

Ohio has many horses.
Cleveland Indians
Cincinnati Reds
Cleveland Browns
Cincinnati Bengals
Ohio State Buckeyes
Cincinnati Bearcats
Xavier Musketeers
Miami Redhawks
The hockey team in Columbus who's name escapes me.
Professional soccer in Columbus.
Dayton Flyers.

There is no comparison to Kentucky sports and Ohio sports.

Thats why we put our resources into our university programs. You can have your hockey in columbus, macsters and A-10 collegse (we have those too). I'm a big Reds fan and like having them up there. The only thing I wish Louisville had was professional football.
