I thought I'd break off from the Whit thread and look to see if anyone had any ideas on possible AD candidates?

I was not a fan of MT and really like(d) Whit and the next AD will be crucial in hopefully getting UC into a power conference.

The pedigree doesn't always need to be stellar; for instance Jurich came from Northern AZ and Colorado State... so no previous BCS experience. I mention UL because it wasn't that long ago that UC was superior in atlhetics to UL in both FB and BB.

As far as attributes the "next man in" will need to be an excellent fund raiser to keep capitol improvements coming.

Someone that doesn't have 'no' or 'can't' in their vocabulary... pet peeve of mine is when I hear posters say UC 'can't' such as pay for better teams to come in and play, etc. In the recent past those same people would have said UC couldn't get world class architects to design buildings on campus (Thank you Joe Steger) or build Varsity Village (Thank you Bob Goin).

We had a similar thread before Whit here: http://csnbbs.com/thread-508000-page-3.html. And I had a few suggestions at the time; my top candidate was Todd Stansbury Associate AD at Oregon State. He is now AD at UCF. I think it's unlikely he would leave UCF for UC.

2nd - Terry Mohajir of Kansas; he is now the AD at Arkansas State. The press release is here: http://www.astateredwolves.com/ViewArtic...205689340. His bio here: http://www.astateredwolves.com/ViewArtic...=207575261

3rd - David Benedict is now an Associate AD at Minnesota link is here: http://www.gophersports.com/genrel/bened...id00.html. From his bio: David's resume includes a long history of successful fundraising campaigns, having served as head of VCU Athletics' development operations and previously as lead developer for businesses and universities in Arizona and California.

Before joining the staff at VCU in 2010, David worked as an associate athletic director of development at Arizona State University and as the executive director of ASU's fund raising arm, the Sun Angel Foundation. He also served as senior associate athletic director for external relations at Long Beach State University and worked in the private sector as senior vice president for the Scottsdale Health Care Foundation.

Here are a few new names for consideration (random order):

Nevada AD Doug Knuth: http://www.nevadawolfpack.com/genrel/031113aab.html

CSU Associate AD David Crum - http://www.csurams.com/genrel/david_crum_882621.html

Thoughts?
We need someone with P5 connections, fund raising, maybe someone who has overseen a facility remodel (the Shoe and Field-house are next) I would like someone in Tommy T age range this time. A Bob Goin type with Big time experience
not on their way up. That's not asking for much! Maybe someone who can bring in a younger person with them to be groomed to take over in 5 years so we can be done with the search etc. The problem we have now is Whit cleaned out
his top tier in the last year. I hope those loyal enough to UC may get some promotions out of this too.
I'd like to go ahead and toss my name in the ring.
I'd call up Jurich and ask him who UC should hire.
I think we already had this thread here, but iirc it didn't stay very focused so maybe it's worth another shot. Good list crew btw.

The first guy that I thought of was Tressel. Then again he was the first guy I thought of to replace Butch and the first guy I thought of to replace Treadwell at Miami. Who knows what's going on with him but my take is he'd be better off getting back to coaching football as opposed to Administration.

Moving on, one guy whose qualifications I found intriguing is Alabama Deputy Director of Athletics/Chief Operating Officer Shane Lyons as I mentioned in that thread. You can read more there, but he's worked for the Big South Conference, for the NCAA, as an associate athletics director at Texas Tech (overseeing compliance) for three years and recently spent 10 years as an associate commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference before coming to Alabama to become the "right-hand man" (including running the daily operations) of their previous AD, Alabama legend Mal Moore. He got passed over last year to replace the late Mr. Moore by a former player pulled from the private sector but stayed on there however seems very interested in becoming an AD.

All that makes me think he might be a real asset in maneuvering re-alignment and at the very least competent in the day-to-day AD role especially with football. Fundraising might be an issue especially since I have no idea what he's like personally.
Tim Pernetti—former AD at Rutgers and current Chief Business Officer of Major League Soccer expansion team NY City FC.

Pros:
-Has media connections. Former broadcaster for ABC, FSN and ESPN Regional Television from 2002-2005.
-He oversaw the day to day college football business for ABC Sports and was Vice President of Programming & Talent of CSTV.
- He managed the agreement between CSTV and the MWC to produce the MTN network.
- As AD at Rutgers, he is credited with delivery more than $100M in new revenue to the athletic department in four years.
- Oversaw the expansion of the stadium from 41,0500 to 52,454.
- He developed the plans and raised the funds to renovate their basketball arena (RAC or Rutgers Athletic Center).
- He was the architect of the agreement to bring Rutgers into the B10.

Cons:
-The Mike Rice scandal. This ultimately cost him his job as he only suspended Rice for three games and gave him a fine.
-Salary. I am going to guess he would command near the top end (or even outside) of UC’s budget for the position. That being said given what is at stake it may very well be well worth the price.
I know this likely isn't a possibility, but I would absolutely call up Beebe, the former Big 12 Commissioner and see if he's interested.

I also think Steve Lyons would be a fantastic hire if we were to do so. He has massive amounts of experience with very talented and smart athletic directors as well as two conferences and the NCAA. He seems like the perfect AD hire for us in our current state.

WRT to Pernetti, he's got a very nice list of pro's and his "role" in the scandal doesn't really bother me. I'm also not that worried about his potential salary - at least as compared to most other legitimate AD candidates although I don't know what he makes now in the MLS. But that does bring up a potential hurdle when you consider he was hired just last September to get them ready to start playing in 2015. Would he leave that quickly? Would you want to hire someone who would leave that type of job that quickly?

Dan Beebe is an idiot. Seriously.

And his presence would be a BIG deterrent to us being a candidate for the Big XII.

Your last couple sentences are valid items to add to the "con" list. His work experience/background definitely matches what we need. If he leaves the MLS to come here odds are he would do the same to us in a couple years when a bigger fish came calling. I guess we need to ask ourselves would we be ok with another AD bailing in 2-3 years. I am sure most would say yes if the guy raises $100M here, completes the Nippert enhancement without a hitch, solves the basketball arena quandry and gets us into a P5 conference.

I do like your suggestion of Lyons as well.

One thing to think about is that the odds are any other up and comer we hire (like Lyons) would likely do what Whit did in a few years anyway. It least with Pernetti there is a lot of evidence to show he is capable of getting it done.

You can't be afraid of hiring great people because they might leave in a few years. Does anyone regret hiring Brian Kelly? I sure hope not. Obviously, if someone leaves it brings uncertainty in the next hire. But to not hire someone because they may leave in a few years would be foolish.
I don't know who he or she is, but the perfect candidate would be someone with A.D. experience, that has STRONG ties to UC or the Cincinnati area (and their dream job is to be here), that can raise funds, that has connections to P5 conferences if the opportunity arises or the ability to make those connections, and can sell UC's football and basketball and keep people interested/raise interest in those sports, and can do it even if UC is to remain in the AAC.

Does that person exist?

Remember Bob Goins had a little scandal in his background and he was great. Mike Thomas was at best a jerk. I would strongly suggest MC and TT be highly involved in approval.

Those first two things should have zero influence on who we hire. AD experience is not required. Whit had none, Mike Thomas had some. Which of those two did a better job? Ties to the area should not have anything to do with making this decision.

Tressel is raising $$$ at Akron. His current title is Executive Vice President of Student Success and and he is teaching a football class at the school.

There are strong rumors surfacing that he will replace their President who is retiring at the end of the year.

I will clarify - I meant athletic department experience, but in my opinion head athletic director (or associate) would be desired.

Also - I stressed the PERFECT candidate. My perfect candidate would want to stay here - this would be their 'greener pasture'. I was thinking ties to the area would help in that regard.
