Just a friendly reminder to all that it is a violation of NCAA rules to make contact with a recruit via Social Media. Yes, I know everyone does it, but the NCAA will eventually make an example of someone, and that school will not be in a P5 conference.

ASU just sent out several Warnings to boosters for making this unfortunate mistake.

Thanks for the heads up. Every one of our schools is guilty of it (as is the rest of FBS). Don't be the idiot that costs your school and your team.

Funny thing is almost all of this is related to the recruitment of Matthew Eaton, who Ark State and App State fans have both been going after on Twitter. The fact is that the NCAA is going to eventually jump on someone for this when they go a step too far, and I'd much rather that school be in CUSA than the Sun Belt.
Arkansas State has sent warnings to boosters and has its tail covered. I hope App has as well.
Just out of curiosity, is it only a violation if the guilty party is a donor?

Nope.
  • Have participated in or been a member of an agency that promotes the institution's intercollegiate athletics program
  • Have made financial contributions to the athletics department or a booster organization for the department
  • Have made financial contributions to the athletics department or a booster organization for the department
  • Have been involved otherwise in promoting the institution's athletics program
  • Have been a season ticket holder
  • Have provided benefits to student-athletes or their relatives or friends

So technically, if you promote your school to a recruit then you are a booster and can't promote your school to a recruit.

Just be aware that if they ever do crack down, one of the penalties is "disassociation" from the booster in question. Which would be a bummer for a fan.

If you've ever bought a ticket to an App State event, You are considered a Booster.
Even true would have to question the friendly reminder coming the first Monday after a certain WR visited stAte this past weekend. Especially with them and App being the only contenders mentioned.
Kid looks like a huge attention whore

My guess is that he mentioned to the coaches during his visit how much he enjoys the fans talking to him on Twitter. Of course, he absolutely loves the attention, and is feeding into this.
Not only is it a violation, it's creepy and pathetic.

Our fans are not all innocent angels. Our school has been issuing warnings to them for it (maintaining institutional control).

Time for everyone to knock it off.
No one should have started doing it to begin with.
As I am now a graduate of my university, I see recruits like cheerleaders: Look, but don't touch.

Fans need to do a better job of helping their compliance departments by letting other fans who are committing violations know they are committing violations...and that its not wise.
This is a rule that can never be enforced.

I don't endorse it, and believe it will actually do more harm than good (once fans start getting nasty when a recruits signs elsewhere and it will happen).

Social media good until it's bad.

Not fully. But it would not surprise me to see schools at some point block all accounts that contact a recruit. You don't have to identify a guy to block his account.

Either that or they ditch the rule entirely.

Some of our new FBS members might not yet realize that their schools are the ones that get made examples of at this level.
We understand.

We may have been born at night, but not last night.

The rule as written would never hold up given the changes in society. It does need to be addressed this season though.
Following some recruit sounds about like some adult following Justin Beiber.
Yuck.
thanks for reminder......probably would not be inforceable but someone somewhere sometime is going to get nailed......and everyone is right....if you were in school there, bought a ticket.....etc....you are a fan and booster.....

It is amazing how much you can and can not get away with if you actually follow the letter of the law....simply put.....follow the letter and you get away with nothing......don't and if you go to the right school....you get a Cam Newton...
