The kids are excited school is cancelled for today (or they will be when they wake up). I guess Rice is closed today too?

I guess there's something about us playing Marshall in men's sports that brings out the crazy weather in Houston.
Maybe I should blame Marshall for the almost 2 hour drive into the Village last night. Unbelievably bad considering I left Tiki at 4 pm. It looked like everyone got scared and ran for it like during Rita. Of course coming home was a snap as the roads were almost vacant after 9 pm.
It was almost 45 minutes from just inside the loop at post oak-ridiculous
I'm staying in my hotel. Don't dare to venture out yet
Schools on the Northshore area of Greater New Orleans are closed today as well. Winter is upon us! Hey, it could be worse - we could be in the Northeast.

Hear, hear! Crummy weather that is rare and gives you a day off sure beats prolonged crummy weather in which you have to go work.
We've had under an inch of rain (in total) since LAST JULY 1ST - and this is our typical rainy season.

Never thought I'd compain about sunny and 75 for a month straight .. but could use a little liquid precipitation this way if you can spare some.
I guess part 2 of the ice storm might hit tomorrow (Rice hasn't cancelled classes for tomorrow but they are delaying things). I'm not sure if it will be as icy as it was Friday but the timing might be more during the day than Friday (which was mostly overnight and early, early morning), which could make things a little worse overall. Especially if it does get below freezing (although the weather is sure taking its time dropping).

It could also be an issue for the Tulane women's basketball team to get here for their game on Wednesday night. It does seem like New Orleans might get worse weather from this system than Houston so I wonder if they might not get here a day early. They probably can make it here Wednesday but maybe not Tuesday?
Most things in NOLA are locked up tomorrow. Schools (including Tulane, Loyola and UNO), businesses, government offices, airports, bridges and some highways will be closed. Grocery stores today were packed as they are before hurricanes. My law firm will be closed tomorrow, but we'll all be working remotely as long as the power holds up. When snow is predicted, this place goes nuts!
Houston will be shut down too. My wife's law firm hasn't shut down tomorrow (yet) but she's hoping they do. I don't think any lawyers (or legal secretaries which is what she is) qualify as an 'essential' city employee.
The storm warnings are being degraded as I type. This "storm" might just fizzle out before it gets near Houston.

Wonder how texd is doing in Au'tin ?
Can't speak for Texd, but I can report that Austin is a real mess right now---road conditions in north Austin may actually be worse than they were last Friday. Most schools have transitioned from "open" to "2 hour delay" to "cancelled" over the past 3 hours.
North of Houston is pretty bad this morning, but quite a bit north. The system as a whole is sagging a bit south so I don't think we can say it won't hit inside the loop at all. It's probably best that the mayor erred on the side of caution but in general, the weather services didn't get a particularly good grasp on this system like they did last week.
Around 9 am, it's just getting to freezing in my area south of Tomball. We're starting to see elevated surfaces, outdoor furniture, plants, etc., with a layer of ice. Looks like an occasional ice pellet of some type as well.
Rice didn't shut down but said anyone could take off for any reason like childcare. My wife went on her merry way at 8:30 when it was dry and temperatures in the upper 30s. Now we have light rain and the temperature has dropped to 32. Hope it warms up later today so she can get home.
Thread title is somewhat premature. I just hope enough ice melts early enough tomorrow morning to not cancel school again.
We had about 10 minutes of light snow at my office this morning at Memorial and Chimney Rock. Not enough to stick to the ground or anything but still a relatively rare sight in Houston.

Could be worse. You could be in Atlanta like our former OC.
