My guess would be that interview was a mutual thing. If he was going to leave a place like Oregon, he'd want to know what the status was here. Just because he's been at UAB and knows the minefield a bit does not mean he knew where everything stands internally with the BoT.

Moot point now anyhow. Best of luck to Coach Neal in the future.

This would seem indicate that announcement is imminent.

Or he realized how he much he would be making.

That and how much he could pay his assistants. I no way we'll see the salaries McGee and staff received this time around.
If things look like the way they are going, the salaries received previously will not be needed at this time.

Yeah, we didn't get a helluva lot of bang for our buck.

So true........that $250,000 to Reggie Johnson still stands out. At least he was a nice guy though.
I know lots of nice guys I wouldn't pay $250K to coach my defense.

Of course, that/those are the target salaries in their minds of the coaches being interviewed for HC and, subsequently, assts...
I could see 1 or 2 of our choices possibly bringing a lot of their staffs with them and I really wouldn't have a problem with it.

Neal was a red herring, along with Gran. Mackin wanted to play it close to the vest with Clark but a "source" blew the whole thing up. Just my speculation.
Bill Clark.
Just remember that no matter how much we love UAB, it's still a minefield job. Anybody we talk to might decide not to stick his hand in a meatgrinder, or may talk to us and explore the options and then choose to stay where he is, or use the offer as leverage to sweeten his contract and stay where he is. Clark might do just that. Everything we say here is speculation - it's not like many of us really have anything solid from the inside, and the ones who do tend to be pretty closemouthed about it.

We're trying to read the tea leaves here.

The Interview:

Mackin: Hi John
John: Hi Brian
Mackin: This is just a courtesy interview
John: Oh ok
Mackin: We already have decided on a new coach.
John: Oh Ok
Mackin: Well that about covers it. Any questions?
John: Ummmm no
Mackin: Thanks for your time and good luck at Oregon.
John: No thank you for the courtesy interview!
Riiiiight.

I'll be glad when we make a hire and some of the crazy subsides.
Did any one read the article and see that Neal decided not yo be interviewed. He pulled his name before the interview so that doesn't mean we are closer.

That and Blazertalk has a pretty sorry record at correctly reading the tea leaves.

It says he was set to fly down for an interview but decided against it.

Truth. Speculation's fun, but Lord knows we should be expecting a name out of left field.

But the minute we do, it'll come out of the home dugout. 03-lol

John Neal turns down UAB, saying, ‘I want to retire at Oregon’ http://dlvr.it/4jNdSt
It was a generic phone interview that went sorta like a general conversation:

John: Oh ok
Mackin: We already have decided on a new coach. Do you still want to interview?
John: Oh Ok. Knaw that's fine.
Mackin: Well that about covers it. Any questions?
John: Ummmm no
Mackin: Thanks for your time and good luck at Oregon.
John: No thank you for the courtesy call (interview)!
