This continues to be updated - it appears they took some of the suggestions from the bottom comments about leaving some out - Luau, Pete & Sam's, etc.

I know Anderton's closed, but we were there with my wife's sister and her husband maybe a year or two before they closed and it was as good as ever. I enjoyed Justine's the few times I went there. A friend of mine lived near the owner and used to take me over to their herb garden.
My father in law loved Pete and Sam's and we usually had our Christmas Party at The Knickerbocker.
That list brings back a lot of memories.

Public Eye was good. I even had one of those famous take to lunch to get fired there. Guy was selling his business and took me there to let me know before he told everyone else. Jerry Maguire scene.

Without a doubt! Was my favorite BBQ in Memphis.
Gridley's and Shakey's Pizza maybe. Shakey's was one of the first pizza places I remember plus you could get a pitcher of coke. Public Eye was good too.
Maybe this isn't deserving to be on this list but Marina's on Overton near Stonewall was an outstanding restaurant for many years. Mediterranean cuisine that changed countries every two weeks. Great stuff. No liquor license so you could bring your own choices of wine.
And I think Cafe Society had been in business long enough to qualify as well as Automatic Slim's. And even though it has closed but Cafe Samovar was pretty cool.
And they left off Monte's Drive In on Summer Ave.
The Public Eye used to have a spot in the Hickory Ridge Mall Food Court back in the day. I painted a couple of signs outside the Overton Square location for the Goldberg's in the late 90's. Not sure how long they had owned it then.

The last time I ate there was before a WFL game. Best onion rings in town at the time.

Yes to both. I would also add The Hungry Fisherman into that group. For a kid, there was nothing better than being able to feed the fish and turtles in that pond behind the restaurant.
I had this link posted in the Memphis landmarks thread- I can't believe they don't have Big John's restaurant on Airways listed, Grisantis- They also need to add Giovannis that was on Cleveland and the Western Steak House on Madison..

Quick story on Pete and Sams. I knew Sam pretty well and used to sit and have chats with him. He once told me how he opened. Pete was his cousin from Chicago and was in town during the summer. He said it was a scorching summer day a s they stopped in what is now a modern day convenient store to get a cold drink. The owner had a for sale sign up and it was a good location( Airways and Alcy if I remember correctly). They ended up buying the place and opening. Pete took off back to Chicago after a few weeks a and never came back. He said it would have cost more to change the sign so he left it as Pete and Sams.

Marina's is probably my all-time favorite restaurant in Memphis.
Others good choices for restaurants no longer in business include Melos La Taverna, John Grisanti's, Western Steakhouse, La Tourelle, Buntyn, Lupe 'n Bea's, La Montagne, Squash Blossom, Harry's on Teur and Giovanni's.
