12 team is where it needs to go. Round one on seeded campus sites the week after conference championships. Include ALL conference champs. Regular season would matter. Better teams would get BYE or tuneup games.

This year would look like this with seeds based on last BCS standings and CUSA, MAC and Sunbelt champs seeded by Sagarin Rank
Round 1 Dec 15
#9 Fresno St at #8 UCF with winner to face #1 FSU
#12 Louisiana Laf at Stanford with winner to face #4 MSU
#10 Bowling Green at #7 Ohio State (at large) with winner to face #2 Auburn
#11 Rice at #6 Baylor with winner to face #3 Alabama
These sites would be determined by seven bowl rotation
Round #2 Dec 22
Semis New Years Day
Final Monday January 13
It seems like such a great deal but in the short term many of the G5 winners are woefully unprepared to play at that level.
You are right that 12 is the perfect number but only the top 6 conference champions should be guarunteed spots. The top 4 conference champions get byes. Try to avoid rematches. So this year, the seeding would be something like this

1. FSU
2. AUBURN
3. Mich St.
4. Stanford
5. Bama
6. Baylor
7. Ohio St.
8. S. Car.
9. Oklahoma or Oregon
10. Missouri
11. Clemson
12. UCF

Alabama ahead of Stanford for sure. Likely Clemson odd team out and Oklahoma, Oregon, and Missouri in. Polls and BCS had that(only Clemson ahead of Oregon in coaches poll).

No way La Laf, Rice and BG belong in the playoffs.

The only way to get a 12 team playoff in the current set up is to include all conference champions. Or you do a complete split between the P5 & G5.

This. An 8-4 G5 school doesn't belong in a playoff over Oklahoma, Clemson, or South Carolina
12 teams means you added a week and 4 byes. If you are going to add a week, go to 16. No byes.

In any case, you have to seed the bracket properly. Highest seed vs lowest, etc. You could tweak that a bit so conference mates don't meet in the first round or 3 teams from the same conference don't wind up in the same half of the bracket. Ultimately it should come down to 1v4 and 2v3 to see who goes to the championship game.
At 12 teams I think you have to cap conference participation at 3. Only P-5 conference champs and MWC and AAC are assured a bid. Then seeded like NCAA:

1. FSU - 8 Oklahoma/9 South Carolina Winner

2. Auburn - 7 Ohio State/10 Clemson Winner

3. Michigan State - 6 Bama/11 UCF Winner

4. Stanford 5 - Baylor/12 Fresno State Winner

Left Out - Mizzou (4th SEC Team), Oregon, MAC Champion, CUSA Champion, Sun Belt Champion

Using 2013 - 3 SEC teams, 2 ACC/B10/B12 teams, 1 P12, 1 MW, 1 AAC

At 12, Mizzou, Oregon, Louisville, UCLA, and Wisky have a *****.
12 would be perfect. I like that the top teams get byes...gives the regular season more meaning.

I would also have no autobids. Best 12 get in, no exceptions.
Go to 16, include all conference champs. If you don't like it, either move to the Belt where you can win the conference every year or be good enough to get one of the six at-large bids.

the conference cap is one of the biggest changes in the new system. IT's not going to change. If SEC has 5 top 10 teams- they're going to get rewarded.

I think that will kill it and lead to negative externalities. If it's 12 cap it at 3, if it's 16 cap it at 4.

Considering there's no cap with the current 12 team CFP system- not going to ever be one.
can somebody explain how this playoff is fair to the kids playing the games

12 is stupid. either do 8 or do 16. The whole play in game crap is just that, CRAP.
I'd prefer eight, but also no autobids. the negotiating position of the G5 should be, "The autobid barrier-to-entry is not needed by the P5 to garner the vast majority of the playoff spots. It provides no benefit to the P5, and serves only as an unfair disadvantage to inhibit the G5."

by the way, the other position the G5 should be taking is that the playoff do not use contract bowls. they should be at neutral sites separate from the bowls, or on-campus.

For a 12 team playoff, give every conference champ a guaranteed spot, if they rank in the top 20.

I also think when assigning seed numbers, all conference champs get seeded first, then move on to at-larges.
This is my plan for college football.

Highlights include:

1) 16 team playoff (really 32 because conference championship winners automatically make the playoffs).

2) 10 game regular season.

3) 2 post season games for every team that doesn't make the playoffs.

4) Gets rid of bowl games.

5) Reasonable total number of games for each team. 2 teams max play 15 games. 2 other teams max play 14. Everybody else plays 13 or less games.

5) 5 distinct and unique time periods for college football. OOC play, conference play, conference championships, ladder games (conference versus conference play during December), and playoffs. Under my plan college football would own Thanksgiving weekend because of conference championship games and January because of the 16 team playoff.

It'd be so much better than what we have now.
