Six outdoor NHL games in 2014;
Yankee, Dodger Stadium included

If you're not a fan of outdoor hockey, then you will not like the NHL's plans for next season. Beginning with the 2013-14 season, the outdoor game concept the League has cashed in on will expand dramatically.

During TSN's "Insider Trading" segment Tuesday, Darren Dreger reported that the league will begin a stadium series next season featuring six outdoor games, starting with the Jan. 1, 2014, Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium. The other five match-ups will be:

• Ducks vs. Kings at Dodger Stadium, Jan. 25
• Devils vs. Rangers at Yankee Stadium, Jan. 26
• Islanders vs. Rangers at Yankee Stadium, Jan 29
• Penguins at Blackhawks, Soldier Field, March 1
• Senators at Canucks, BC Place, March 2

Contracts are to be finalized, according to ESPN's Katie Strang, but that's just a matter of paperwork.

The weather is crazy and really adds to the game.

Are they wearing "retro" jerseys?

Personally, I think its really cool for them to do it. I think they have enough cold weather cities to make it work for more games.

The only thing I think they might want to look at is All Star Game hype and this getting a good balance of PR and marketing muscle.

Only thing negative I can see is it kind of cuts a lot of the Southern US teams from hosting a Winter Classic.
This becomes less of a spectacle when you do it 6 times a year...
13 degrees, heavy heavy snow, Toronto and Wings fans mixed, couldn't feel my feet and I HATE Howard, but other than the unmoving traffic during intermissions it was amazing.

Dodger Stadium ice impresses before sellout crowd of 50,000

LOS ANGELES -- Teemu Selanne skated off the ice and walked to the visitors dugout at Dodger Stadium, rubbing the eye black on his cheekbones in disbelief beneath the Southern California sky.

"If somebody would tell me 10 years ago that we were going to do this, I would have said they're crazy," Selanne said. "But we have the technology to do it now, and it's pretty great."

Dodger Stadium isn't a field of dreams for many hockey players, but the Los Angeles Kings and the Anaheim Ducks are thrilled by the chance to play the NHL's most unlikely outdoor game on Saturday, on NBC Sports.

Both teams got their only practice on the ice Friday under clouds and cooler temperatures than the recent string of 80-degree days. The local rivals came away fairly impressed with the ice sheet in place for the league's first warm-weather stadium game.

Projected NY Rangers and NJ Devils lineups for Yankee Stadium showdown in Bronx following Saturday practices

The NHL says 7,000 gallons of hot chocolate are expected to be brewed at Yankee Stadium during the Rangers’ Stadium Series games on Sunday and Wednesday.

Temperatures are supposed to drop for Sunday’s Rangers-Devils game even from Saturday, when it was snowing during the Blueshirts’ afternoon practice session. Still, Devils veteran right wing Jaromir Jagr said he’s seen much colder, like when he participated in the 2009 KHL All-Star Game at Red Square in Moscow, Russia.

“This is like summer compared to hockey in Moscow,” Jagr said Saturday afternoon with a smirk.

No matter what the weather brings Sunday, the rivals are going on the ice at 12:30 p.m. for an important game between clubs that suddenly are close in the jam-packed Metropolitan Division standings.

I watched a little of the Devils/Rangers game. Looked good but I wonder how the views in the stadium are as the hockey rink is so much smaller than these fields of play.

Did you see how the one and Dodger Stadium was?

NY Rangers vs. NY Islanders: Stadium Series

The New York Rangers have proven to be the masters of outdoor hockey.

They held on for a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders, as seldom-used Dan Carcillo scored the game-winning goal early in the third period.

Not only have the Rangers swept their two games at Yankee Stadium this season, they had defeated the Philadelphia Flyers in the Winter Classic in 2012.

They are 3-0 in outdoor games, a record that no other team can match.
