With news outlets reporting Jeff Monken's soon to be announced departure I called an old friend who is close to the athletic staff at GS to ask him what he had heard about what's going on. He tells me that while TK and others are being fairly tight lipped about Monken he did have an interesting conversation about who would be the top candidate should Monken leave and the name is: Brent Pry the current Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator at Vandy!

Keep in mind this is second hand knowledge based on an informal conversation (otherwise known a gossip) but if true I think he would be a tremendous hire at HC for Georgia Southern.
Can GSU afford him, and would he keep the triple option?
would be a good hire for gaso

Probably yes, and probably no.

Vandy is wide open, and UL when he was there ran a run heavy Zone Read spread.

I would say yes to both but over time I can see us transitioning to an Auburn style offense under Pry. We simply don't have the players to change from the option next year so any change would be two or three years off imho.

Yeah, but he's the Defensive Coordinator at Vandy so why would it matter what offense they run? Grab a good TO OC and you're good to go.

It probably won't be possible but if we hire a new HC I am hopeful our current OC Davis stays to handle the offense.
Brent Pry is at the top of my list right now
Keep the triple option no matter what. Need to hire alums. Not necessarily at HC, but as many possible on the staff.

Hiring alums would be a nice option but not a deal breaker for me. We should hire the best possible coach for the position period.

There's not very many alums out there with the experience needed to take over/coach a soon-to-be FBS program. Most coaches that you're going to be interested in are going to have learned under PJ for many years like Monken, Jasper, etc.
Love to get Brent Pry back, but we need to stick close to the PJ Tree to keep the offense at least until we can recruit toward a transition. The PJ offense has been tweaked enough to be able to adjust to defenses, but running the same crap everyone else runs is stupid. If school's like ours depend upon talent to win, we'll lose a lot.

Navy, Army, Ga Tech, Wofford, The Citadel, Southern Utah (formerly), and Cal Poly all run Georgia Southern's version of the TO which was developed by Paul Johnson when he was promoted to OC in 1985. The concept is the same as the wishbone, but the formation and blocking schemes are mostly built around the mid-line. Because it was developed to specifically fit Tracy Ham at QB, it was dubbed the Ham-bone offense and later called the flex-bone. It is our identity, our trademark, and unless we grow to have millions of dollars to buy SEC talent we need to keep being ourselves - it's worked pretty well so far.

it appears that david eLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLson is available.

has experience in the transition.
GS press conference at 1:00pm
What about Brian Bohannon? Kennesaw's coach?

A School alum should be at the very bottom of any HC list. Its rare you run across one with enough experience for the head job. I always reference the scene from We Are Marshall where the president started calling alums about taking the job...after he had apparently scratched out twenty other names on his list.
Just listened to our AD speaking. He said he hoped to have a new coach in place by beginning of New Year-- well that gives him a week. Mentioned traditions of Ga. Southern are very important and that seemed to indicate a triple option coach, but then went on to say the type of offense a new coach runs would be up to him. Said we did offer a counter offer to Monken (more money) but he was set on going to Army. Said those on staff who he feels are qualified would be considered but also said he has a list himself.

My guy feeling tells me one of our assistants will NOT be the new head coach. I feel a hiring from outside coming. If we hire an option type coach I have to believe we are looking at an assistant from Navy.

Let the crazy speculation begin.

I like the option but I am not afraid of change. The only problem is that we have players for it so it would be better if a new coach was committed to running it, at least in the short term. For head coach I think we have many options to look at, Pry, Davis, Jasper and others would be a good starts but whoever is hired must be ready to hit the ground running or we risk losing our committed recruits.
Take it for what its worth but he did break the story about CJM leaving...as much as I don't like Seth Harp

@harponsports: Let's see if this tweet gets ganked as well. My sources tell me Vandy's Brent Pry is #1 choice to replace Jeff Monken in Statesboro.

My sources tell me the same thing and I HOPE it's true.
