Full Version: I've been Spoiled

I have to admit this football and basketball season has been rough to watch. Football got beat up against most FBS teams and basketball is losing to teams like GSU and College of Charleston. It is disappointing but some of that comes from having been spoiled in past years with our success.

I've seen the football team make two FCS tournaments and beat some good FBS teams. Basketball has made the tournament a couple of times and I even got to watch them lose a heartbreaker to Butler at the Verizon Center.

That success has spoiled me in some ways to thinking their would be minimal downtime in our move to FBS and basketball would continue to produce a winner. No that doesn't mean I expected us to win all our games against FBS schools but I thought we would be more competitive than we were. I also didn't expect basketball to be losing to what I feel are inferior teams.

I am hopeful next year will be better for the football team. I still do believe they have a bright future. Basketball sadly, I am not quite as sold on. I was not a fan of hiring Jeff Jones and to me the jury is still out on him. I guess I just have to hope he can make us competitive again.

Idaho is the only FBS victory for the Monarchs thus far, and that was this season. I think I understand where you're coming from, and I would say practicing patience will probably be necessary (esp. with basketball.)
painted, don't let the facts get in the way of a good story...

I prefer odubum's version of our recent past.

I prefer odubum's version of our recent past.

I admit that is a rarity on the interwebs.
Odubum's account of football is correct, but there is no illusion about where we were in FCS before we moved up either. Cal Poly, Ga Southern, and several FCS programs exposed our defensive issues long before these FBS teams did. So I'm still very realistic about our football situation which, to me, is still VERY positive. Honestly, I didn't even expect to win at Idaho because I didn't think they were really that bad to lose at home to a FCS team from so far away. Football has done very well so far in my book because we still are not truly a FBS level team. But these next round of schollies have to get us to another level.

Hoops is another story and everyone is spoiled from the past. But I will give any new coach taking over a team more than a few months to turn it around. To me the biggest positive that has occurred over there is the establishment of a staff that is designed to recruit. Every one of those guys were lead recruiters at programs in the past. And they really have to do that well over this off season for ODU.

And one more thing, I hope we do not see another red shirt in the next 15 years. If a recruit isn't ready for D-1 out of HS, I'm hoping we'll let him go to a level that is appropriate for him.

You're always going to have red shirt guys and even gray shirt guys. All programs use red shirt players
No I agree with that normally. I just think the prior coach has used enough to take a couple of decades off. If the NCAA clearinghouse forces it on us like Moseley or Burgess at VCU, I'll take it. But I don't think we need to recruit for it and it seemed like the last guy wanted almost every recruit to have a 5th year.

Are you saying Idaho isn't a good FBS team? I mean, didn't they make the Lysol Tidy Bowl one year.

Alas, that was a typo on my part. It should have read FCS.

Don't feel so bad. We just beat UTSA 99-68 in San Antonio.
Give it time. Men's hoops already at 5 wins for this season and it's Christmas day. Coach Jones doing the best he can with what he has. Any additional W means a better season than last! We just need to finish games! We were right there with C of C, St. Louis. Richard Ross has broke out this season! Landed on ESPN top 10 for slam dunk. Football Monarchs gave ECU and Pitt a run for their money. UNC was bound to happen with the amount of injuries on both sides of the ball. I'm very pleased with 8-4 (Should have been 10-2!) but would like to see at least a competitive defense. There is hope. I love Coach Wilder and his philosophy and most importantly, his enthusiasm for the game. We'll be ready to go August 2014!

Man, I haven't felt this happy since seeing the ending of "Love Actually." Thanks for the post!
