Idaho punter Austin Rehkow (he's the high schooler who kicked the 67 yard FG last year) was named to the Walter Camp AA team after leading the country in punting yard average. Even more impressive he was 5th in net yard average which is no small feat when you look at how terrible our defense was. He's only the 8th freshman to be named to the team.

Not a knock on Idaho but how did this kid end up there? All the big boys really like to have a solid kicker/punter on their roster.
Really impressed with his development so far as a true freshman. His punting was great all year and his kicking improved immensely. He also just walked on to the basketball team. We always seem to have good punters/kickers so it's nice to not have missed a beat in that area of the team.

I have no idea. Idaho has had some phenomenal punters. Bobby Cowan was an all american and runner up for the Ray Guy award. The guy before that spent a year or two with the jets. On the place kicking side, the guy Rehkow replaced was a 4 year starter who was a freshman all american and was great at kickoffs and broke the guy he replaced's FG% and XP% records. Meanwhile you see punters at top 10 schools shank punts, have horrible FG accuracy and struggle to put kickoffs in the endzone.

Maybe there are fewer schools who want to spend a schollie on a kicker so we can grab better players that way. It blows my mind that a great coach like Saban refuses to bring in a solid kicker and it costs him a title shot this year, and should have cost him one 2 years ago. Spending 1.1% of your scholarships on a kid who will play for 4 years and determine the outcome of a lot of big games seems like a no brainer to me.

Not to derail the thread but are you sure Saban refuses to bring in a solid kicker? Maybe he thought the one he had was better?

As for the Idaho kid, congrats.
congrats.
