The Georgia Southern Eagles come into Sunday evening's game with a record of 5-5. Three of those five victories were against non-D1 schools. They also have a 10-point win over Presbyterian (3-8) and an 18-point win over South Carolina State (2-7). Presbyterian and South Carolina State are two of the worst rated teams in the country, as KenPom.com has them rated 345 and 350 respectively. Recall there are 351 D1 basketball schools.

Georgia Southern plays in the Southern Conference, along with Chattanooga (UAB's opponent on Wednesday) and Samford. Elon and Davidson are picked to lead the Southern Conference this season, while Georgia Southern and Chattanooga are picked for the middle of the pack.

The university is located in Statesboro, Ga. Enrollment is 20,212. School colors are blue and white. They started playing basketball in 1926, going to D1 in 1971. They last made the Big Dance in 1992, and last played in the NIT in 2006.

Their first-year head coach is Mark Byington, who played at UNC Wilmington.

Their average home attendance last season was 1,563.
Georgia Southern at 5-5 is rated 264, which puts them slightly ahead of Troy (294) and Florida A&M (289). KenPom.com has UAB favored by 15 points.

They are projected to go 9-7 in conference and 15-16 overall.

Miami (121) had to go into overtime to beat Georgia Southern by 1 point. Miami hit two free throws with 9 seconds left to win.

Last year they finished 7-11, 14-19.
It appears UAB (83) will be the second highest rated team Georgia Southern plays this season. They lost to West Virginia (61) by 33 points (101-68).

Their go-to player is #5 Jelani Hewitt (6-2 185 Jr). He is involved in 33.3% of the possessions when he is on the court, which is 9th in the country. He is a good shooter, hitting 76.4% of his free throws, 51.7% of his two-pointers, and 36.6% of his three-pointers.

Hewitt is averaging 23.5 points per game, and ended up with 38 in a loss to Campbell. He was the Southern Conference Player of the Month for November -

The other major contributor is #11 Tre Bussey (6-3 170 Sr). Bussey is hitting 42.4% of his 3-pointers.

Bussey is averaging 20.4 points per game, and had 28 in the loss to Old Dominion.

Hewitt and Bussey are the main scoring threats.
I always enjoy reading your informative posts. It gives me a little effortless scouting prior to going to Bartow.

You are welcome. I enjoy gathering the data.

Georgia Southern's best rebounder appears to be #13 Angel Matias (6-4 225 Jr). He has had double digit rebounds three times, and has had nine rebounds in three other games.

Sounds like Rod Rucker.
We knocked them out of the NIT one year.
We got this. We aren't Florida football.

You forgot to mention that their President has been a friend of mine since we were teenagers.
Great guy.
Has been a fantastic president so far and knows no ceiling when it comes to his university.
UAB is 6-1 against Georgia Southern. UAB is 4-0 at home and 2-1 on neutral courts.

In November 2007, UAB played in the Glenn Wilkes Basketball Classic. The first game was a home game against Stetson, which UAB won 86-49. The rest of the Classic was held in hell, I mean Orlando.

The first game in Orlando was against Florida State. UAB lost 78-70, and lost Paul Delaney for the season.

Next up was Georgia Southern. UAB lost 59-57.

Next up was Rhode Island. UAB lost 74-69.

That infamous trip to Orlando left UAB at 2-3 in the young season. UAB went on to finish 2nd in C-USA at 12-4. Memphis won the conference at 16-0, and lost to Kansas in OT in the National Championship game. C-USA was the 10th rated conference that 2007-2008 season.

With Mike Davis at the helm, of course UAB lost to Tulsa in UAB's first game of the C-USA Tournament.

UAB played in the NIT and won at VCU and lost at Virginia Tech.

UAB finished the season 23-11, and rated 61st by KenPom.com. Georgia Southern finished 13-7 in the Southern Conference and 20-12 for the season, and rated 128th.
A few corrections and notes:

1. Those games were in Daytona, not Orlando.
2. It was the Georgia Southern game, not Florida State where Delaney went down. He played 16 minutes and scored 2 points.
3. UAB is 5-0 at home against Ga. Southern.

A note: Although Georgia Southern finished 20-12, those 20 wins were later vacated by the NCAA for academic fraud. Seems the NCAA frowns when assistant coaches do players course work.

Keep in mind that a mere 11 1/2 months ago, on January 2, 2013, we beat them in Bartow by a mere four points.

MB, thanks for the corrections. It hurts so much to say Daytona, I now say Orlando.

At the risk of stating the obvious, this is not the same Blazer team as that one.
